Forward

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

It was close. The country is still divided. It’s time to go forward and work together to make this a united nation again without animosity. A house divided against each other will fail. Together, we can overcome any adversity, solve any problem, cut out the bickering and restore the greatness of the United States of America.

There are so many great minds in this country, both conservative and liberal. It would seem the best of every side could unite and do what has to be done to get back on the track that will lead us all back to prosperity and happiness.

I am reminded of the Castle Rock Fire just a few years ago when all of Blaine County’s citizens bonded together with the help of heroic firefighters to overcome a force of nature that threatened to destroy our community. It was a demonstration of what could be done when we all work together.

It saddens me to watch the two great cities of Sun Valley and Ketchum involved in an arrogant and futile struggle for power in the Wood River Valley. No one wins except the lawyers, who seem to promote and prosper over the differences. Yes, I know we’re just a small resort community tucked away in the mountains of south-central Idaho and what we do and how we conduct ourselves must seem trivial to the rest of the world, but like that fire that threatened us all, we must remember how unity prevailed.

It’s time we all compromise and return to the task of making this our home sweet home. We can all give in a little if it promotes harmony again in the valley. We get through all the seasons together, bail each other out when winter storms cripple our highways or when forest fires threaten our homes or when one of us is involved in an accident or struck with a formidable disease. We rally together. We put on benefits for the unfortunate. We give and give and give unselfishly to restore what was lost and make it better than before.

Let’s go forward, respect our differences and return civility to our times. Remember how you felt when you decided to make this area your home? Let’s return to those lofty ideals and press on to make our home the warmest, the safest, the greatest place in which to spend the rest of our lives.

Nice talking to you.
