Go hardcore in Saturday’s “World Sprints”

Challenge yourself and test fitness by joining the fourth annual “SkiErg World Sprints” Saturday, Nov. 10 starting at 1 p.m. at the Hardcore Training Center in Ketchum.

The center is located on the corner of 1st Ave. and 5th St. across from the Idaho Mountain Express, according to event organizer Bill Nurge.

He said, “The 1,000-meter indoor race on the Concept2 Ski Erg allows you to compare your time against others worldwide in a one-weekend showdown of speed, stamina and strength.” Winners are eligible for prizes, he added.

According to company literature, the Concept2 SkiErg makes the sport of Nordic skiing available to all. It builds strength and endurance by working the entire body with the poling motion integral to all techniques of Nordic skiing.

There is no charge, but you must sign up for a start time in advance with Nurge at 720-1829.

 

Zeitgeist Half Marathon in Boise

Seven Wood River Valley runners finished Saturday’s 11th annual Zeitgeist Half Marathon 13.2-miler in Boise that raised funds for the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation and Idaho Donor Network. There were 875 finishers led by Nathan Quist, 17, of Meridian (1.21:18) and Haley Cooper-Scott, 32, of Spokane, Wash. (1.29:20, 14th overall).

Quist, a Rocky Mountain High School senior, had just finished 22nd in the Idaho State 5A boys’ cross country prep race at Lewiston Oct. 27. Another Rocky Mountain High senior, 17-year-old Dana Snell of Ketchum, placed third among all Zeitgeist women Saturday in 1.34:08, 26th overall. Snell had placed ninth in the State 5A girls’ cross country race in Lewiston.

Leading the Master Male class Saturday was Wilhelm Northrop, 42, of Boise in 1.25:59, eighth place overall.

Other locals: 73—Kurt Eggers, 48, of Ketchum 1.40:53 (7th class). 228—Nicole Kashino, 38, of Ketchum 1.52:44 (17th class, 70th out of 501 women). 316—Shanon Christensen, 40, of Hailey 1.58:18 (19th class, 115th woman). 516—Carol Brown, 54, of Hailey 2.11:46 (15th class, 235th woman). 655—Cathy Miller, 60, of Fairfield 2.23:23 (1st class, 330th woman). 725—Beryl Barnes, 61, of Sun Valley 2.35:02 (3rd class, 379th woman). 824—Emily Matthews, 20, of Hailey 3.03:07 (22nd class, 459th woman).

 

Harvest Classic women’s ice hockey

The Sun Valley-based Five Star Kitchen Design women’s hockey team went 3-3 and, after a slow start, climbed all the way to the B Division consolation championship game of the 10th annual SoBe Lifewater Harvest Classic tournament Oct. 26-28 at Boise’s Ice World.

Five Star dropped its first two games 5-0 and 3-1, then reeled off three straight wins by 7-1, 4-2 and 1-0 scores before dropping the consolation final 2-1 to Wildfire.

Team member Lacie Hernandez said, “We went from last place to second—taking runner-up for the second year—and did a great job coming back to make the championship game.”

Sunday morning’s eye-opener against the Wasatch Wings from Utah turned into a 1-0 Five Star triumph on a game-winning goal by Georgia Hutchinson, assisted by Dotty Sarchett. Goalkeeper was Linda McMahon for the final three games. She allowed only four goals in those games.

Weekend scoring totals: Hutchinson 4 goals/2 assists; Sarchett 3/3; Hernandez 1/3; Erin Griffith 2/1; Hannah Carr 1/3; Sara Schroeder 2/1; Lisa Wood 0/3; Erika Greenberg 0/1; Nancy Parsons Brown 0/1; Tristan Ellison Gralenski 1/0; and Laci Watkins 0/1. Also playing was Jini Griffith.

 

Ultimate cage fighting

Ultimate Cage Fighting returned to the Wood River Valley Oct. 27 with seven fights in Hailey. The crowd enjoyed bouts between heavyweights, women, pros and some of the best amateurs in the state.

Local fighter Julie Daniels lost for the first time in an exciting battle with a more formidable opponent. Julie had numerous arm bar attempts that almost ended the fight. Greg Knoepful ended up in an all-out, back-and-forth war. Knoepful lost a close decision most fans thought he had won.

Finishing off the night was undefeated Wood River High senior Storm Anderson. He unleashed a barrage of punches as he repeatedly slammed his opponent to the mat. Anderson received a championship belt after posting a Round 1 technical knockout.
