Shootout winner by Evans lifts Chapman soccer

Ketchum’s Aimee Evans returned to the Chapman University women’s soccer lineup from a concussion injury Oct. 3. Since, the Panthers have been on fire and have qualified as an automatic entry for the NCAA Division 3 playoffs.

Playing at home, Chapman (17-5-0) won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tournament championship Saturday, Nov. 3 with a dominating 4-1 victory over the No. 4-seeded Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens (9-7-2) at Wilson Field in Orange, Ca.

Evans, a 5-8 senior forward, scored the fourth and final Chapman goal in the championship game. It was her third goal of the season, moving her into a tie for fifth place on the all-time Panthers goal scoring list with 27 goals. She is seventh all-time in total Panther points with 62 in four years.

Winners of 11 of 12 games by a combined 34-4 score since her return a month ago, Chapman can thank Evans for making it into the championship game.

On Halloween at Wilson Field, Evans scored the game-winning goal in the fifth round of a penalty kick shootout lifting the No. 2-seeded Panthers past No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (11-7-0) and into the finals of the SCIAC tournament. The regulation game had ended after 110 minutes of dramatic scoreless play.

The game-winning goal was especially sweet for Evans (3 goals, 3 assists for 9 points), who had missed a breakaway opportunity late in the second half and again in the first overtime period of the semi-final.

It was Evans’ second game winner in 12 games this fall, along with the winner in Chapman’s 1-0 road victory over Pomona-Pitzer Oct. 10. She has nine career game winners included in 27 goals and 8 assists for 62 career points. Evans led Chapman with 10 goals as a junior and 12 as a sophomore.

Evans, a 2009 Wood River High School graduate, is the Hailey school's third-leading career goal scorer with 75 goals. A daughter of Rich and Juli Evans, she was the leader of the 18-2-1 Wolverine squad in 2008 that won the school's second straight State 4A girls’ soccer tourney consolation crown.

On Monday, the NCAA announced the 64-team draw for the Women’s Division 2 tournament starting Nov. 9-10 at Blossom Soccer Complex in San Antonio, Texas. Chapman has a tough first-round draw against the No. 2-ranked Hardin-Simmons University Cowgirls from Abilene, Texas.

Hardin-Simmons was the 2010 Division 3 women’s champion with a 24-0-1 record over the Messiah College Falcons from Grantham, Pa. in the title game. Messiah (18-1-1 this year) has been in the championship game four straight years, winning in 2011, 2009 and 2008.
