Prep athletes honored on All-League teams

Monjaras, Brand saluted as top coach, player

Athletes from the Community School, Wood River High School, Carey School and Camas County High School have earned All-Conference honors in volleyball, soccer and cross country for 2012.

In addition, Wood River boys’ soccer coach Luis Monjaras earned “Coach of the Year” honors in the Great Basin Conference. Monjaras led the Wolverines to third place in the State 4A tournament.

And Wood River senior defender Trevor Brand was named GBC “Player of the Year” leading the Wolverines to a 14-2-4 record and 13 shutouts in the team’s 20 games.

Cross country honors

Community School senior Laurel Fiddler was named “Girls’ Co-Runner of the Year” with Jerome senior Jasmine Nesbitt in the All-Classification District 4 cross country squad.

Fiddler won the 2A/1A district title and placed fourth in the State 2A 3.1-mile footrace with a time of 18:58, just 46 seconds off the winning pace of Melba sophomore Sierra Manzer on the Hells Gate State Park course in Lewiston Oct. 27.

Community School junior Nate Nasvik placed 32nd in the State 2A boys’ race in 17:45.

Others on All-District were Wood River seniors Chase England and Ketchum Wilt (first team), and Wood River junior Janel Passey (second team).

 

Volleyball

Former Wood River High athlete B.J. Price earned GBC “Coach of the Year” recognition for guiding the Twin Falls Bruins to another conference championship this fall.

Wood River seniors Kori Paradis and Lily Richards made the GBC first team, and sophomore Ciceley Peavey earned honorable mention.

On the All-Northside Conference 1A Division 2 teams were Stephanie Moore and Whitnee Hurless of Camas County (first team); McKayla Mecham of Carey and Larissa Stewart of Camas County (second team); Caroline Jones of Community School, Sierra Sabin and Kylie Walker of Camas County, and Jaide Parke of Carey (honorable mention).

 

Great Basin soccer

Joining “Coach of the Year” Monjaras and “Player of the Year” Brand on the 2012 GBC All-League boys’ squad were Zack Freeman (first team); Alex Lopez, Andrew Graves and Eron Bates (second team); Stephen Pfeiffer and Alberto Salinas (honorable mention).

Wood River High’s girls placed three on the GBC soccer first team—Maggie Williams, Allison Gasenica and Haley Montgomery. Second teamers were goalkeeper Kiana Chapman, Brigette Thomas and Lucy Brannon. Samantha Sutton earned honorable mention.

 

Wolverine football

Head coach Kevin Stilling handed out team honors Monday night during the 2012 Wood River football awards night for 50 members of the varsity and junior varsity squads.

Leading scorer and rusher KJ Savaria took the “Best Offensive Player” and “Cross the Line Award” honors. “Best Defensive Player” was Hayden Thayer. Gus Conrad was “Best Special Teams Player.” Wyatt Griffith accepted the “Most Improved Player” award.

Junior varsity head coach Shannon Flavin praised his players and recognized Zach Swanson as the team’s Most Valuable Player and Kole Mauldin as the top lineman.
