Community School’s One Act Play Festival this weekend
The Community School’s Middle School Drama Club will present the 11th annual One Act Play Festival on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. at the Community School Theater. Tickets are $5 at the door.
The skits being staged—summed up as “A Madcap Menagerie”—are a true collaborative effort. Produced and polished by seventh-grade teacher Joel Vilinsky, the plays are performed by 35 Middle School thespians and directed by 28 Middle and Upper School students. Many other sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders are manning the light and sound booth, creating costumes, acting as stage crew and designing posters.
“The One Act Festival is a terrific night of comedy,” said Vilinksy. “I’m excited that so many students wanted to be involved. This year I was really impressed by the number of sixth-graders who chose to participate, even though it’s their first year in middle school.”
The material for this year’s plays is diverse and hilarious.
“Words, Words, Words” features three monkeys with writer’s block, trying to produce “Hamlet.” “Hot Rod” follows a young couple on an ill-fated trip to the bridal registry, and in “3 Turkeys,” three very different gobblers’ personalities clash over the best way to collect corn cobs.
Other casts of characters feature lemmings, mothers joining the bandwagon of every new parenting trend and group therapy participants.
“Ice Box,” a play written a few years ago by Community School senior Madeleine Caraluzzi, is back on this year’s roster by popular demand and she directs this production.
Auditions for Company of Fools productions upcoming
Company of Fools will hold auditions at the Liberty Theatre on Tuesday, Nov. 13, and Wednesday, Nov. 14, from 4–5:30 p.m. for its February/March production of “Distracted” by Lisa Loomer.
The company is looking for a male to play the role of Jesse. Jesse is an energetic, funny, wild, sweet, angry young man with a mouth on him. The actor needs to look 8-10 years old. A female to play the role of Natalie needs to play someone who looks 15-18 years old. Natalie is Jesse’s babysitter and has difficulty navigating her life. Natalie is also a cutter.
Those auditioning must be available to rehearse and perform from Jan. 24 –March 2.
Auditions are by appointment only. Those who audition will be reading from the script. Scripts will not be available prior to the audition. Those who would like to preview the script should arrive early.

Met opera Live in HD Series continues with “The Tempest”
Composer Thomas Adés’ adaptation of Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” will be broadcast live from the Metropolitan Opera in New York on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11 a.m. “The Tempest” had its world premiere at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden in 2004 and was hailed as a masterwork.
Director Robert Lepage recreates the interior of 18th-century La Scala, including the hidden workings beneath the stage, where Prospero, the banished duke of Milan, practices his otherworldly arts. Magnetic baritone Simon Keenlyside stars as Prospero, a role he has sung to great acclaim in London.
Attendees at the Met HD:Live broadcast have the advantage of feeling like they are part of the action on stage as the cameras focus on the singers along with costume and scenery details.
Intermissions include backstage tours and interviews with the star performers, conductor and the production manager, giving one a great sense of what it takes to stage the opera. The opera will last for two and a half hours.
Sun Valley Opera and Metropolitan Theatres are the local sponsors of the Met HD:Live broadcasts. Tickets can be purchased at the theater box office in Hailey in advance or on the day of the opera. General admission tickets are $22, seniors $20 and students $18.

A year in the brew business celebrated
Sawtooth Brewery is celebrating its first anniversary Saturday, Nov. 10, with the biggest party of fall slack. The party will feature three bands, with live music from 3-10 p.m. under the tent on Sixth Street, which will be closed from Main Street to Leadville Avenue. Food vendors will also be available throughout the party.
The highlight will be 23 Sawtooth Brewery beers on tap, with 13 inside the tap room and 10 outside on the street.
Local artist Mark Mueller will open the live music followed by local band Army of Pines. Hillfolk Noir from Boise will play its style of 100 percent original “junkerdash” from 7-10 p.m.
The party will keep going into the night at the tap room and continue at Whiskey Jacques’ with a tap takeover and official after-party featuring live music from The Quick and Easy Boys.
Sawtooth Brewery is located at 600 N. Main St. in Ketchum, with the entrance on Sixth Street. Parking is available on the south side of Sixth Street in the Ketchum public parking lot.

Paint those pawnails—it’s Christmas card time
Santa Paws will be in his finest red suit, ready to share “Ho, Ho, Ho’s” and get his photo taken with pet owners and pets at the Sun Valley Animal Center in Ketchum on Saturday, Nov. 10, and at the Sawtooth Animal Center in Bellevue on Sunday, Nov. 11. The events will benefit the Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley.
Both will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day.
“This is a great opportunity to capture that perfect holiday photo while supporting the shelter,” said Andrea Parker, Santa Paws event organizer and the Barkin’ Basement thrift store manager. “My family loved the cards we made from the photo of my son and our puppy!”
Photo packages are just $20 and include two 5-by-7 and four 4-by-6 prints from the professionals at 5B Photo. While waiting for your turn with Santa, share the holiday cheer with free refreshments and snacks.
Those looking for a fabulous new holiday outfit for their photos can check out the Barkin’ Basement at 111 S. Main St. in Hailey. The store is open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Some fairy tales include dragons and knights, some are horses and cowgirls.
As part the The Center’s current exhibition “Happily Ever After?” Andrea Scott will give a slideshow and talk Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 5:30 p.m. in The Center, Hailey in the old Ezra Pound House.
Scott founded “The Idaho Buckaroo Project” and is telling the stories of the dying art of this ranch life that includes photographs, beautiful handwork and stories about the people who live the life.
Beer and wine will be served. The event is free.
