Martha Ellen Brumback

Martha Ellen Brumback, age 84, of Orlando, Fla., passed away on Nov. 2, 2012. Ellen was born on Sept. 27, 1928, in Toledo, Ohio, to Frances Tiedtke and John Sanford Brumback. She was their eldest child, arriving 12 minutes ahead of her twin brother, Charlie. She grew up in Toledo, attending Ottawa Hills public schools and then attended Abbott Academy from 1944-1946. After graduating from Abbott she attended and graduated from Wellesley College in 1950 with a degree in economics. 

She had a successful, varied and interesting career, including serving as secretary to the dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration and executive assistant to former President Herbert Hoover. Thereafter she moved to Florida and worked in various capacities for the Republican delegation of the Florida Legislature and aided the Bureau of the Census, serving as the central Florida director of the effort to document the population of Orange and Seminole counties in 1970. She spent the remainder of her professional career managing family real estate and financial affairs, including serving as a member of the board of directors of the Van Wert (Ohio) National Bank.

Ellen was committed to her community and gave her time generously to several local charitable and civic organizations, including the Orlando Museum of Art, the Salvation Army and the Sun Valley, Idaho, Summer Symphony. Ellen also was a member of the Junior League of Greater Orlando, the Rosalind Club, the Country Club of Orlando and the local Wellesley Club. She was a member and generous supporter of Park Lake Presbyterian Church.

Ellen and her sister Frances spent more than 30 summers in Sun Valley, Idaho, enjoying many outdoor pursuits such as hiking, fly fishing, gardening and bird watching.  They introduced many friends and family members to their beloved Idaho.

She is survived by her siblings:  Charles T. Brumback of Sarasota, Frances M. Brumback of Winter Park, John S. Brumback (Susan) of Orlando and Cynthia A. Brumback (Ming Wang) of Washington, D.C.; by her nephews and nieces:  Charles T. Brumback, Jr. (Kim), Anne B. Meyer (Ted), Wesley W. Brumback (Paula), Ellen B. Allen (Lindsey), Cynthia F. Brumback, Helen B. Leonard (Tony) and Christine B. Brumback; and by grandnieces and grandnephews: Sarah A. Meyer, Allison L. Meyer, Andrew N. Allen, Emily L. Brumback, Mitchell B. Allen, Sarah E. Brumback, Charles T. Brumback, III, Anthony C. Leonard, III and John B. Leonard.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 4-7 p.m. at Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home, Lake Ivanhoe Chapel, 301 NE Ivanhoe Blvd., Orlando.  A memorial service will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m. at Park Lake Presbyterian Church, 309 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando.
