Express to report election results online

Results expected after press deadline

The Idaho Mountain Express will report election results in online only next Wednesday, Nov. 7, rather than online and in the print edition, as has been done in previous elections.

Subscribers to the Idaho Mountain Express email news updates and viewers of the website, www.mtexpress.com, will be able to view the results online as soon as they are available.

The results of local and state elections, including races for Blaine County commissioner, Blaine County sheriff, District 26 House seats, a 1 percent local-option tax for air service and an amendment that would add the rights to hunt, trap and fish to the Idaho Constitution, will be reported on the Express website, through online news updates, and in the Friday, Nov. 9, edition of the paper.

Idaho Mountain Express Publisher Pam Morris and Editor Greg Foley said they made the decision to post results only online last week after Blaine County Clerk JoLynn Drage said she would not have results by the paper’s press deadline, which is often pushed to midnight on election nights.

Drage said she may have preliminary results, but only from smaller precincts. Not enough ballots would be counted as of deadline for the county to have any final results on any of the races, she said, estimating final results at 3 a.m.

According to Express distribution staff, if print versions of the paper were to be held to print final election results, the papers would not reach readers’ hands until Wednesday afternoon, due to traffic and a late distribution schedule.

Print editions of the paper will be available on schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 7.

The county Elections Office now does all of the ballot counting in Blaine County. Previously, city votes—such as the local-option tax election this year—would have been counted by city, not county, election offices.

Results are expected by 3 a.m. and will be sent out to subscribers via email as soon as they are available.
