Challenger seeks to unseat Rep. Pence

Republican Lee Barron aims for District 26 House Seat B

The battle for District 26 House of Representatives Seat B has brought out perhaps the starkest differences among local candidates this year.

Incumbent Rep. Donna Pence, D-Gooding, has served four terms in the Legislature. Her opponent, Corral resident Lee Barron, said he has two years off and has strongly held political beliefs.

Barron has said that in his door-to-door campaigning he’s found that most voters in the district want someone who can stand up against the federal government, especially on the issue of the Affordable Care Act. Barron has said many of the voters he’s talked to do not want the act implemented, and he said the state shouldn’t have to work with the federal government on this issue.

But Pence said that of the people she has spoken with, voter concerns seem to be a little closer to home. She has said she thinks voters are looking for someone who can promote the whole district—whether it’s tourism or education.

Pence has said that despite the fact that she lives in Gooding, she’s made an effort to understand the issues concerning Blaine County. Barron said that he, too, would be able to represent the district well. He grew up in Corral, a town about 10 miles west of Fairfield, but spent a lot of time in the larger region of District 26, which includes Blaine, Camas, Gooding and Lincoln counties.

The election is Tuesday, Nov. 6.
