Miller, Remington compete for House

Candidates aim to replace longtime Rep. Wendy Jaquet

The race to represent House Seat A in District 26 started last year when Rep. Wendy Jaquet, D-Ketchum, announced that she would not run for another term.

Jaquet served nine terms in what is now District 26, which includes Blaine, Camas, Gooding and Lincoln counties. Former Community School Athletic Administrator John Remington, a Democrat, and Camas County rancher Steve Miller, a Republican, filed to run for the seat and have been campaigning vigorously in recent weeks.

Miller, a farmer and owner of the Wolf Springs Ranch just over the Camas County line, said he’s been talking to business owners in the district, trying to ascertain what the Legislature could do to help create jobs in the region. Miller has said he has found that business owners are mostly concerned about state tax rates, and those who are in agriculture are concerned about water rights and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency regulations. He said that if elected he will work to amend the state’s Tom Luna education bills, known collectively as the “Students Come First” plan.

Remington has been campaigning since December, and said he has chosen to do more knocking on doors than putting up signs. He has met with elected officials and school administrators in all four counties that make up District 26, he said.

Remington said he has found that people want to have a close connection with their legislators —and they also want Jaquet to remain in her seat, a harder obstacle to overcome. Remington has said he thinks he could best serve the district by following in Jaquet’s footsteps and continuing to participate in the town hall meetings that the district’s three legislators—Jaquet, Donna Pence and Sen. Michelle Stennett—hold before, during and after the legislative sessions. He said his experience working with school administrators across Southern Idaho would help him work with Republicans in the Legislature.

Remington has been endorsed by Jaquet and Stennett.
