Charles Lee Barron

Age: 74

Education: B.S. geological engineering, B.S. metallurgical engineering, M.S. metallurgical engineering

Current profession: Farmer, rancher, engineer, businessman, well driller (retired)

Why are you running for office?  District 26 needs a representative who can effectively participate in the Legislature by working from the majority, instead of the minority. I intend to work to return as much power to our local governmental bodies as possible.

Previous government experience: Idaho House of Representatives (1973-1975)

Party Affiliation: Republican

1) Idaho is in a position to become a major player in energy and technology.  I will promote green energy like hydro, wind and a power invented in Idaho—nuclear.  We should continue to promote technical industries like Micron and HP and businesses like Power Engineers. 

2) I do not and will not support abortion as a form of birth control. I consider abortion the murder of a helpless human being. I fully support modern methods of pre-conception birth control for women.

3) The right to hunt, fish and trap is part of our heritage. The right to hunt, fish and trap should be inserted into the Constitution so that there is no doubt about where Idahoans stand.

4) People should not be discriminated against, nor should employers. State law should not be used to force someone to hire someone with whom they fundamentally disagree.

5) The Legislature should actively assert its rights under the Bill of Rights in the 10th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.”

6) The Affordable Care Act is an attempt to nationalize and socialize our lives.  I unalterably oppose this act and will work to prevent its implementation.

 

Donna Pence

Age: 70

Education: B.S. from the University of Idaho and masters in education from Idaho State University

Current profession: District 26 representative, retired teacher and tree farmer

Why are you running for office? I first ran because I felt I could represent the interests of this district in agriculture, small business and education in the Legislature. I feel my subsequent re-elections are the result of having always sought the advice of the people of this district.

Previous government experience: Served four terms in the Idaho House of Representatives

Party affiliation: Democrat

1) I will be bringing forth again a bill to provide a tax credit for agriculture processors that add additional processing steps to their existing businesses. We need to process more goods here in Idaho rather than having to ship them out of state. 

2) Abortion should be safe, legal and rare. Rather than additional laws putting roadblocks in the way, I would provide more extensive education to everyone, but most obviously to our young people, that includes ways of preventing pregnancy if they choose to be sexually active.

3) I voted for it, but still have reservations about whether it is actually needed. Protection for hunting, fishing and trapping is specifically mentioned in our Constitution and that is adequate protection, in my mind.

4) I feel bullying or discrimination of any kind is wrong.   

5) Implement policies that assure the public that we make our decisions ethically and openly. Potential whistle blowers should have an avenue to bring up their concerns in a manner that would shield them from retaliation and protect the person being accused until an investigation is completed.

6) The Affordable Health Care Act is law and we need to deal with the deadlines that come with it.  I did not institute it, but we have a responsibility to make it work as best we can for Idaho as long as it is in effect.
