Go bravely into the woods

But be prepared to lose your cool in this forest

The sadder and weirder this world gets, the more effort seems to be put into those things that remind us why it’s still fun to be alive. One of those inherent pastimes that seems to stand the test of time is submitting ourselves to be scared.
The Haunted Forest in Bellevue, set in the dense and leafy woods of the Howard Preserve, continues to outdo itself in the scare genre every year and this year promises to be no different.
The event—scheduled to start at dusk Oct. 29 and 30—is for adults and kids 10 and up. Things in the past have been so hairy scary that organizers have again opted to open up at 5:30 p.m. for the younger kids who want a fright but want to sleep through the night.
About 150 volunteers have spent months creating props and scenarios to scare the living daylights out of the adventurous. While for some it may seem like a lifetime, the whole trip takes about 15 minutes. The gate closes at 9:15 p.m. to allow the final group to get through before the real ghouls envelop the forest in impenetrable darkness.
A special tribute edition this year will be spontaneous performances of the “Thriller” dance by the Sun Valley Ballet, which the late Phil Deckard, a dedicated Haunted Forest volunteer, conceived before he died earlier this year.
Tammy Schofield, one of the major organizers of the event, said people are still needed to guide the tours and help with set-up and break-down. Those interested can contact her at the Bead Shop in Hailey.
Schofield wants to remind the public that not only is this event a crowd pleaser but it also raises money for the Howard Preserve, for future Haunted Forests and other events around Bellevue.
