Proud of being one of only three teams to avoid feeling the winning sting of the Gooding Senators this fall, the Community School boys’ soccer team was also proud of its winning 9-7-2 campaign in a tough league.

The Cutthroat boys watched with keen interest as High Desert Soccer Conference king Gooding (14-1-2) won its second State 3A soccer tourney title in four years with a 1-0 championship game win over Fruitland (12-4-0) Saturday in Twin Falls.

Coach Richard Whitelaw’s Cutthroats tied Gooding 2-2 on the Senator field Aug. 27. The only Gooding loss of the season was 4-2 at Buhl Sept. 17, which was quickly followed by a 4-1 Gooding victory over the Cutthroats Sept. 19 in Sun Valley.

That Gooding win was the first of nine straight for the Senators ending in Saturday’s title game triumph. Bonners Ferry (10-8-2) won third place 1-0 over Teton (13-5-1), and Wendell (13-4-2) took consolation honors 1-0 over Weiser.

The school’s soccer banquet is set for Sunday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. at Elkhorn Restaurant.

( Final team statistics: Community School 9-7-2 (4-1-1 home, 5-6-1 away, 6-4-1 league for #4 seed, 4th place in HDSC tournament). Goals scored: 51 (2.8 per game). Goals against: 35 (1.9).
