FMAA ignores citizens’ interests

“Reminder: the goal of this effort is to develop alternatives that are technically feasible at the existing site, regardless of cost or potential environmental or social impact.”

Whether or not you believe that Friedman Memorial Airport should be expanded rather than relocated, that statement included in the Airport Authority’s “Airport Solutions Update” of Oct. 5, should be cause for alarm. Five of the seven members of the Airport Authority are elected officials who have demonstrated by that statement a flagrant disregard for the residents they represent.

The Airport Authority is determined to force this expansion “regardless of cost” on the taxpayers who duly elected them and with a total disregard for potential damage to the environment or a negative impact to their constituents whose homes could be “acquired” and all those whose lives would be negatively impacted.

The following individuals make up the Airport Authority: Commissioner Tom Bowman (not up for re-election), Commissioner Larry Schoen, Commissioner Angenie McCleary, Hailey City Council member Martha Burke, Hailey City Council member Don Keirn, former Hailey Mayor Susan McBryant and Ron Fairfax.

If you believe your tax dollars should be spent in the most responsible manner possible, are concerned about the environment and the well-being of the valley’s residents, and that elected officials be accountable to those they represent, I hope you’ll keep the statement included in the “Airport Solutions Update” in mind when casting your vote.
