Middle school boys’ soccer caps 12-0 season

Outscoring opponents 62-9

The Wood River Middle School boys’ soccer team finished a very successful fall season in the Magic Valley Athletic Conference on Monday, Oct. 15, with a 3-0 home victory over Robert Stuart of Twin Falls.

Head coach Greg Gvozdas and assistant coach Scott Chaffin were proud of the 27-player squad of seventh- and eighth-graders who compiled an undefeated 12-0 season. They outscored opponents 62-9.

The season opened with three home wins over the Community School (3-1), Burley (5-1), and O’Leary (5-2). The first road test was Jerome Middle School, the perennial powerhouse in the conference and defending league champions.

The boys dispatched Jerome 2-0 in a hard-fought match and followed that with another road victory over Stuart Middle School (2-0). The team returned to the valley and beat the Community School for a second time (6-1) and Wendell (6-1).

Those two victories preceded a win over Bliss (8-0).

After a long road trip to Burley, the boys battled for 70 minutes and left with a well-earned 4-1 win against the Bobcats. The team returned to the road to beat O’Leary 9-2 as the offense began to heat up.

That victory improved the team’s record to 10-0. It set the table for two home matches against Jerome and Stuart—the two opponents that gave Wood River its closest games to start the 2012 season.

A very motivated Hailey team came out and beat Jerome 9-0, pushing the record to 11-0.

The season finale Oct. 15 saw Stuart pack the penalty box, making scoring very difficult for the Wolverines. The game entered halftime 0-0, but the boys finished their chances in the second half to claim a deserved 3-0 win and an undefeated 12-0 season.
