ITD announces dirt track closure

Stanton Crossing to undergo environmental reclamation

The Idaho Transportation Department announced late last week the closure of the unofficial motorcycle dirt track known as Stanton Crossing in southern Blaine County.

The closure became effective Tuesday, Oct. 16.

ITD explained in a news release that the agency is required by law to remediate the area, which was earlier used as a sand and gravel pit for various highway projects. ITD held a mineral lease from the Idaho Department of Lands on the site—located about two miles west of Timmerman Junction—that expired in 2011.

The agency explained that the site has not been “actively used by ITD for more than a decade and over time an unauthorized motorcycle dirt track was created on the leased area.”

ITD is required to remediate the property by the Idaho Surface Mining Act and the terms of the mineral lease.

Remediation is planned to start this month with bulldozing of the site and seeding of native vegetation. Portions of the area will be fenced to restrict access, and information about the closure will be posted at the site.
