4-year-old injured by horse

Girl kicked in face at West Magic Road residence

A 4-year-old girl is recovering at a Boise hospital after being kicked in the face last weekend by a horse in a barn at a residence on West Magic Road, in southern Blaine County.

Blaine County Sheriff Gene Ramsey said Samantha Hutchinson, a resident of Redmand, Wash., and the daughter of Nina Hutchinson, suffered a “complete facial frontal skull fracture” and was being treated at St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center.

“We were told that she was in stable condition and they were expecting her to fully recover from the injuries,” Ramsey said Wednesday.

Ramsey said the accident occurred around 11:45 a.m. Sunday at the Eric Barney residence on West Magic Road about three-quarters of a mile west of state Highway 75.

“They went into the barn to see the horses and the little girl went over to see the horse named Joe and she probably startled it and he took a kick at her,” Ramsey said.

The sheriff said Barney and the girl’s mother were taking Samantha by car to St. Luke’s Wood River and met a Wood River Fire & Rescue ambulance in Bellevue, from where she was transported to the hospital.

Once there, Samantha was flown by emergency helicopter to Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. Ramsey said she was then transferred to the pediatric intensive-care unit at St. Luke’s Boise, where she underwent surgery.

Ramsey described Joe as a work horse not normally prone to kicking, but said the girl might have touched the animal’s leg and startled it.

“I just want to stress that it was an accident,” he said.
