Four county and state races will be showcased in the Idaho Mountain Express' Pizza and Politics Forum next week.

Candidates for Blaine County sheriff, Blaine County commissioner and two seats in the Idaho House of Representatives will present their platforms and answer questions from voters in the valley's only public, nonpartisan election forum.

The candidates forum will take place Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Commons area at Wood River High School, on Fox Acres Road in Hailey. Express Editor Greg Foley will moderate the event.

Running for sheriff are incumbent Gene Ramsey and challengers Steve England and Larry Clark.

Ramsey has worked with the Sheriff’s Office for 31 years, most of which he spent serving as former Blaine County Sheriff Walt Femling’s chief deputy. He has held the post of sheriff since February 2011.

Clark, the Bellevue marshal, has filed as a write-in candidate after an unsuccessful run in the Republican primary against Ramsey. England, a Hailey police lieutenant, has run for sheriff as a Republican in 2004 and as an independent in 2008 and 2011 to replace Femling.

Candidates for county commissioner are current Commissioner Angenie McCleary and Mickey Garcia.McCleary is the Democratic candidate and incumbent, appointed by Gov. Butch Otter in July 2008 to replace retiring Commissioner Sarah Michael. Garcia, a 27-year Ketchum resident and previous candidate for public office, is registered as an independent.

In the District 26 races, incumbent Democrat Donna Pence will face off against Republican opponent Lee Barron. Barron is a Fairfield resident. Republican Steve Miller is running against Democrat John Remington for the seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Wendy Jaquet, D-Ketchum.

Miller is the co-owner of Wolf Springs Ranch just over the Camas County line. He is the former president of the Idaho Association of Soil Conservation Districts and a founder of the Idaho Organic Producers Association.

Remington is a former Community School athletic administrator who worked for the school for 24 years. He is co-founder of the Community School’s Sun Valley Ski Academy and a founding member of the Ketchum-Sun Valley Historical Society.

The public is invited to come to the forums and meet the candidates, ask them questions and enjoy pizza provided by the Idaho Mountain Express.

The event has been organized by the Idaho Mountain Express for 31 consecutive years as a public service.
