The hunt for October

After playing 162 games, major league baseball now enters its playoff season. There are 10 teams poised to battle for a World Series ring. Let the games begin.
   In the American League, the New York Yankees, the Baltimore Orioles, the Detroit Tigers, the Texas Rangers and the team with the lowest payroll in the league that came out of nowhere to clinch the last spot, the Oakland Athletics. (Remember “Money Ball”?)
   In the National League, perennial favorites return featuring the San Francisco Giants, the Atlanta Braves, the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds who are joined by, believe it or not, the Washington Nationals, an expansion team in its third year. Wouldn’t it be great to see the Nationals play in the World Series against the Oakland Athletics? But there’s a lot of baseball left to be played in October before that will be decided. It all begins this weekend.
   My Seattle Mariners, in yet another rebuilding year, finished last in the American League West Division 19 games out. However, they had a better record than 10 other major league teams. There is hope.
   Meanwhile, if you’re not into baseball, the National Football League is alive and well with no real favorite to win the Super Bowl because it seems that on any given Sunday, the worst team can beat the best one. That’s the beauty of this professional sport.
   Let’s see, what else? Oh yeah, it’s the last month in the presidential campaign and the Democratic Party’s Barack Obama is battling the Republican Party’s Mitt Romney to see who will be president of the United States on Nov. 4. In this month of October, a series of debates between the two candidates will be waged to offer the voting public a glimpse of what each man stands for and how the end of bad economic times can be accomplished.
   If you aren’t into baseball, football or politics, there’s plenty to be enjoyed in the Wood River Valley with the Trailing of the Sheep, the Jazz Festival and, of course, Halloween.
   If you’re not into any of this, you still have the greatest gift of all by living here—the most beautiful autumn we’ve had in years. Shut off the TV and get outside with your loved ones. The hunt for October begins.
