Animal Center vets are top-notch

I read with much sadness the story (Aug. 29) about Skylar, the dog who was poisoned by probable wolf bait. When Skylar was being treated by the wonderful staff at the Sun Valley Animal Center, my dog, too, was in the intensive care unit with Skylar—with a near-fatal diabetes incident.

I spent many hours over a four-day period in the ICU with my dog and with Skylar, both of them lingering on death’s door. I had ample opportunity to observe these wonderful veterinarians and their staff who worked all weekend through the night trying to save my dog and Skylar.

My dog miraculously was saved, despite our initial discussions that she might have to be put down. It was the early diagnosis of diabetes by Scott, the immediate admission of my dog into the ICU by Heidi and the around-the-clock, all-hours-of-the-night checking, watching, adjusting and treating by Roy and his technicians that led to the ultimate happy ending to my story.

During my long hours just sitting there with my dog, I watched them mend a dog’s broken femur, and perhaps most incredible, perform a C-section on a cat and save both the mother and the newborn kittens. I watched the staff blow air into the tiny baby’s lungs, willing the kittens to breathe on their own.

I know that this staff did everything they could to save Skylar, that they had the utmost competence to do so if they could, and I am sure they grieve her passing, as do I. This staff truly is talented, and they are truly passionate in their love of all animals. We are blessed to have such a caring, competent group in this valley. Many thanks to the great staff at the Sun Valley Animal Center!
