559 runners tackle Canyon Springs footrace

Fiddler, England pace local thinclads

Community School senior Laurel Fiddler and Wood River High School senior Chase England clocked the best times among 30 local thinclads Wednesday at the Dani Bates Invitational in Twin Falls.

On a sunny and cool afternoon, 559 Idaho runners from 18 schools made the early autumn pilgrimage for the 3.1-mile run at Canyon Springs Golf Course in the Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls.

Fiddler (20:11) further established herself as a contender in the Idaho 2A ranks with a 10th-place finish in the 110-runner girls’ varsity field. But it’s going to be tough to penetrate the armor of reigning State 2A girls’ champion Soda Springs, with its senior Cierra Simmons (19:11) winning on Wednesday.

England (16:39), placing sixth among 135 varsity finishers, waged a good battle with a sophomore from Gooding, Eliseo Garcia (16:38), who is likely to contend in 3A when the state runs are held Oct. 27 in Lewiston. Wednesday’s Bates winner was Idaho Falls senior Andrew Follett (16:26).

There were 22 Wood River High School runners competing Wednesday plus four each from the Community School and Camas County of Fairfield.

Next: The Canyon Ridge Invitational Oct. 10 in Twin Falls.
