Sun Valley’s Marketing Alliance representative resigns

Brooke Wojcik says it’s ‘impossible’ to represent city

Brooke Wojcik, the city of Sun Valley’s volunteer representative to the Sun Valley Marketing Alliance board, submitted a letter of resignation to Sun Valley Mayor Dewayne Briscoe on Friday, effective “immediately.”

“In light of recent [Sun Valley City] Council decisions regarding the [Marketing Alliance], but more importantly for personal reasons, I find it impossible to represent the city as appointed,” she stated in the letter.

Those “council decisions” refer to an Aug. 16 vote by the Sun Valley City Council to reduce Marketing Alliance funding from $356,000 to $250,000. The council made that decision without previously informing Wojcik.

According to Wojcik, the City Council was “unwilling” to cooperate and “unable” to work alongside its representatives and partners in a “fair” and “respectful” way.

“[The] council [members don’t] seem to want someone willing and educated in the field of marketing to represent them, considering their admittedly limited marketing experience; they want someone to bow and bend to their every whim,” she stated. “That person is not me.”

Wojcik stated that “through it all” she “continually” took what feedback the council did give her and asked the Marketing Alliance to consider, if not implement, various requests to “appease” the council.

In a Monday email to the Idaho Mountain Express, Marketing Alliance President and Chief Marketing Officer Arlene Schieven said Wojcik was an “excellent” member of the board.

“[Wojcik was] always taking a big picture, strategic viewpoint focused on the betterment of the tourist economy,” Schieven stated. “We really appreciate the time she spent as a volunteer representative for Sun Valley on our board.”

However, according to Wojcik, the Sun Valley City Council does not share Schieven’s opinion.

“During my tenure, I have endured dismissive hand-gestures and audible slurs to my performance by Sun Valley council members in public meetings,” Wojcik stated in her letter. “I have received emails from Sun Valley council members threatening both my position and the [council’s] fiscal support of [the Marketing Alliance] unless I agree with their position.”

Wojcik stated that it is “impossible” for her to help direct the Marketing Alliance according to the wishes of the city she represents when her opinion is not “respected” or considered “valuable.”

Though Wojcik will no longer sit on the Marketing Alliance’s board, she said her faith in the organization remains unscathed.

“[The Marketing Alliance] is a cause I strongly believe was born out of necessity and will be key to the future vitality of a city we all love,” she stated.
