Skaters travel for Utah Oktoberfest

Two skaters from the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club competed in the annual Oktoberfest meet at Salt Lake City, Utah Sept. 20-23.

Isabella Bourret, a Community School seventh grader, placed first in Juvenile Artistic and ninth in Free Skate.

Katie Peters, a seventh grader at the Community School in Sun Valley, placed third in Preliminary Free Skate and third in Artistic.  

Local coach Lisa-Marie Allen accompanied the skaters to competition.


Weber State golfer grabs IGA championship

Weber State University (Utah) sophomore golfer Ty Travis from Idaho’s Eagle High School was on fire Sunday at Elkhorn Golf Course and rallied to win the Men’s Division championship of the Idaho Golf Association’s Tournament of Champions. A total 108 club champions from Idaho played in the 36-hole stroke play tournament in four divisions.

Travis (78-66 for even-par 144), who was ranked No. 1 in Idaho in his age class from 2006-09, shot a tournament-best 35-31 for six-under-par 66 on his final round Sunday to nip Meridian’s Jesse Hibler (71-74 for 145) by a single stroke in the 42-player division. Travis carded six birdies, nine pars and a decisive eagle on his final hole to finish with 66. The Elkhorn 18-hole course record is 61 held by Doyle Corbett.

Local competitors in the Men’s Division were Dillon Witmer of Ketchum (77-89 for 166, tied for 29th place) and John Radford of Hailey (84-83 for 167, tied for 32nd place).

Jill Good of Boise (77-79 for 12-over-par 156) won the 17-player Women’s Division. In eighth place was Sun Valley’s Georgia Hutchinson (82-81 for 163) while Jennifer Harper of Ketchum (87-88 for 175) tied for 13th.

Ketchum’s Suzanne Williams (76-81 for 157) placed second overall in the 23-player Senior Women’s Division behind Kareen Markle of Meridian (75-75 for 6-over-par 150). Tying for eighth place was Jerome’s Terry Tracy (95-90 for 185) while Mary Jane Burns (97-96 for 193) placed 16th.

McCall’s Kip Reeder (76-75 for 7-over-par 151) won the 26-player Senior Men’s division. In seventh was Sun Valley’s John Manocheo (76-84 for 160). Tying for 11th was Sun Valley’s Carmen Bradley (84-82 for 166).


SVSEF Ski Swap is Saturday in Hailey

Hailey’s Idaho National Guard Armory is the site for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Ski Swap Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5-6. Vendor check-in takes place from 12 noon-3 p.m. and public check-in from 12 noon-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. The one-day sale is Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

Local vendors and residents will provide items. The swap features equipment, clothing and accessories for adults and kids. Admission is $1.


Valley Club ace

George Thomas made a hole-in-one on the No. 7 hole of The Valley Club North Course Friday, Sept. 28. Witnesses were Bob Foster and Doug Christie.


Martial arts in Hailey

Sawtooth Martial Arts is hosting the 130th Soo Bahk Do Dan Classing at the Community Campus in Hailey from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. Open to the public, the event will include form demonstrations, sparring, and board breaking. For details, contact Oliver Whitcomb at 720-6088.


Youth baseball pitching clinic set Sunday

A limited number of youth baseball players ages 10-and-up are invited to the Sawtooth Baseball Academy’s pitching clinic Sunday, Oct. 7 from 2:30-5 p.m. in Hailey, according to academy director Lars Hovey (721-1948). Cost is $20. Coaches are encouraged to attend, free of charge. Conducting the clinic is second-year College of Southern Idaho baseball pitching coach Nick Aiello, who pitched for the CSI Golden Eagles in 1999 and went on to pitch in the Tampa Bay Rays farm system for three years.
