Hailey boys win 3-0 over Minico in soccer

In 7-0 home soccer win over Minico

The unbeaten Wood River boys’ soccer team (9-0-4, 8-0-1 league) stretched its current streak of holding foes scoreless to three-plus games and 292 minutes Tuesday with a 3-0 Great Basin league win over Minico (5-7-2, 3-5-1) at Rupert.

Senior Alex Lopez (a team-high 8 goals) notched his sixth game-winning goal of the season by scoring in the 24th minute on a pass from senior Cole Caminiti. Junior forward Heriberto Mendoza tallied his first goal at 39 minutes, from Guillermo Velasco, for a 2-0 halftime lead.

Junior midfielder Stephen Pfeiffer provided insurance at 61 minutes with his second goal. Having already earned the top seed in next week’s GBC tournament, Wood River came close to matching its streak of 320 minutes of scoreless defense set in the first four games of the 2012 season.

Wood River closed its regular season Thursday at Twin Falls (3-8-3, 1-6-2) in an attempt to become the first GBC team since Jerome in 2008 to finish the league season unbeaten.

The next Wolverine boys’ game is in the second round of the GBC tournament Saturday, Oct. 6 at SunWay Soccer Complex, Twin Falls.

Wood River will need to win two games in the GBC tournament, one to be held at home, to qualify for the State 4A tournament Oct. 18 in Idaho Falls.
