Taekwondo meet results
Sun Valley Taekwondo attended the Idaho Taekwondo Training Center tournament and competed in sparring and forms last weekend. Medal winners were Ethan Hansen (gold, silver), Skylar Maguire (silver, bronze), Juan Reyes (gold, bronze), Larsen Bier (gold, silver), Liam Curd (gold), Steven Lapa (bronze), Zuly Lapa (gold, silver), Paul Vilcapoma (gold, silver), Daisy Martinez (silver, bronze), Ben Wise (silver, bronze), Jennifer Ochoa (silver), Sebi Radl-Jones (silver, bronze), and brothers Benito and Bryan Martinez (both with gold).
Baldy Hill Climb is Saturday
It is three days and counting until the 34th annual Baldy Hill Climb community event sponsored by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. This year’s event is Saturday, Sept. 29. Entry fee is $30 when paid online at spondoro.com. You can also obtain information at svsef.org. Sign up until Friday at the SVSEF office at the base of Warm Springs, or in Ketchum at The Elephant’s Perch, Sturtevants (Hailey store, also) or Backwoods Mountain Sports. There is no race day registration.
The traditional 1.86-mile Warm Springs course rises 3,140 vertical feet from the Warm Springs ski run bridge—elevation 5,880 feet—to the top of Baldy—elevation 9,020 feet. Mountain bikers begin at 7:30 a.m., the free KinderClimb for kids 11-and-younger at 9:30 a.m. at Warm Springs, followed by the Hiking Class at 10 a.m. and Racing Class at 11 a.m. Awards are from 12:30-2 p.m. at Apple’s Bar & Grill, Warm Springs.
“Team Nights” at local ski shops
Ketchum ski shops are holding “Team Nights” this week to help Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation athletes gear up for the 2012-13 ski season. Team coaches will attend. “Team Nights” are Sunday, Sept. 30 at different times for alpine athletes U-12 and older, plus freestyle athletes from Prep Team and up. Formula Sports (726-3194) invites snowboarders as well from 5-8 p.m. Sunday. Sturtevants (726-4501) holds “Team Night” from 1-8 p.m. PK’s Ski and Sports (726-7474) shows its lines from 1-6:30 p.m.
SVSEF Ski Swap coming Oct. 5-6 to Hailey
Hailey’s Idaho National Guard Armory is the site for the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation’s Ski Swap Friday and Saturday, Oct. 5-6. Vendor check-in takes place from 12 noon-3 p.m. and public check-in from 12 noon-6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. The one-day sale is Saturday, Oct. 6 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Local vendors and residents will provide items. There won’t be any big box stores from out-of-town, organizers said. Smaller in scale but better than ever, the swap features equipment for adults and kids for all disciplines, plus clothing and accessories. Admission is $1.
Punt, Pass and Kick results
Sponsored by Pepsi and Wood River Youth Football, the local Punt, Pass and Kick contest was held Sept. 15 in Hailey featuring participants from the valley as well as Salmon, Challis, Twin Falls, Idaho Falls and Pocatello. Local winners were:
Male ages 14-15—Brock Mary 262 feet, 0 inches. Male 12-13—Wyatt Parish 242-6. Male 10-11—Peyton Wise 180-2. Male 8-9—Alex Lergyel 172-10. Male 6-7—Eric Chavez 103-9.

IGA Tournament of Champions this weekend
Club champions from all over Idaho including the Wood River Valley are coming to Elkhorn Golf Course Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 29-30 for the Idaho Golf Association’s Tournament of Champions, a 36-hole stroke play event with 10 a.m. shotgun starts. There are four divisions—Men and Women, and Senior Men (55-and-over) and Senior Women (50-and-over).
Middle School cross country runners
Wood River Middle School cross country runners coached by Bill Cantrell and Steve Poklemba are in the middle of a busy season including recent meets at Magic Mountain south of Twin Falls Sept. 13 and the Jerome Middle School Invitational Sept. 20. On the challenging Magic Mountain course, Amy Cantrell placed fourth overall and Kirsys Campbell eighth, while Landon Nurge and Dane Thompson paced the boys.
At Jerome last Thursday, the Hailey girls placed second as a team in their division and the boys third. Top of Utah Marathon finisher
Hailey’s Rachael Allred, 29, finished her first 26.2-mile marathon run Saturday, Sept. 15 during the 14th annual Top of Utah Marathon at Logan. Allred finished 1,363th overall, the 629th woman and 86th in her 25-29 age class with a time of 5.28:49. The fast and scenic course dropped 1,045 vertical feet through the Blacksmith Fork Canyon to downtown Logan.
Race 2 the Summit Half Marathon
The Race 2 the Summit Half Marathon is Saturday, Sept. 29 in the small community of Horseshoe Bend 20 miles north of Boise along S.H. 55. Three young Horseshoe Bend mothers and fitness-minded runners—Lillie Crawford, Malissa Meyer and Melanie Flake—organized the 13.1-mile run up Summit Ridge Road to promote health and provide financial support and scholarship assistance to school athletic teams. Race 2 the Summit Half Marathon is the only race in Idaho with a scenic view of both the Horseshoe Bend Mountains and also the Payette River. It features a 1,628-foot, 6.3-mile climb to the 4,242-foot summit followed by a long descent back to town. It is Saturday starting at 8 a.m. for the half marathon ($50 entry fee), 9 a.m. for the 10-kilometer ($45) and 5k ($40) fun runs, and 11:30 a.m. for the kids’ fun run ($10).
