Panther spikers gear up for Richfield

Carey splits home matches

It’s a pretty tough Northside Conference in 1A Division 2 volleyball this fall, with Lighthouse Christian making inroads on state champion Camas County, while Richfield and Dietrich are typically strong.

Coach Kathy Whitworth’s Carey Panthers (6-5, 4-4 league) are hoping to make some noise themselves in the eight-school league and have a chance Thursday, Sept. 27 when they host the Richfield Tigers.

The Panthers are coming off three straight league wins over the Community School, Castleford and Murtaugh. Last Thursday, they beat Murtaugh 25-20, 25-16, 25-23, although the Panthers had serving troubles.

Whitworth said, “McKayla Mecham led us in hitting, while Lilly Rivera dug well and Paige Koudelka did a good job setting the ball. And Jaide Parke passed well and was an all-around player. But we did have problems with our serving.”

The Glenns Ferry Pilots, a 1A Division 1 squad, was the other team in Thursday’s triangular meet. The Pilots polished off both Murtaugh and Carey in two straight games.

Carey made the long trip to Malta for a match with Raft River Tuesday, then goes to Camas County and Dietrich for back-to-back challenges next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 1-2.
