2,184 runners gather for Bob Firman

WRHS thinclads in the field

Despite smoke in the Treasure Valley, 2,184 high school runners from 97 schools competed Saturday, Sept. 22 in the 38th annual Bob Firman Invitational 3.1-miler at Eagle Island State Park west of Boise.

There were 25 Wood River High School runners in an event that dates back all the way to 1975, then called the Boise City Invitational.

Wood River coach Monte Brothwell said, “We had smoke, but the temperature caused times to drop even with the smoke. About 98% of our kids had personal bests.”

On Saturday, runners from nine states toed the starting line. The states were Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Alabama, Montana and California.

Best times of the day were Joe Hardy of Seattle (Wash.) Prep 15:03 and Katie Knight of North Central from Spokane, Wash. 17:59. Team champions included Sugar-Salem of Sugar City (Women’s Division 2) and North Central (Men’s Division 1 and Men’s Varsity Elite).

Idaho’s fastest time went to Pocatello’s Elijah Armstrong 15:35. Gooding’s Eliseo Garcia won his boys’ division in 16:38. Wood River senior Chase England placed 20th in Men’s Division 1 with a 17:01 clocking.
