A simple idea

By CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

I just finished “No Easy Day” by Mark Owen (pseudonym for Matt Bissonnette), who was one of the Navy Seals who killed Osama bin Laden last May. The book covers how this Navy Seal got into this service and what it took to earn a place in the most ferocious and decorated combat organization in the world. His tales of brutal training and battleground secret mission successes are astounding and led me to think about proposing the following idea: Let’s scrub the entire military as we know it and just leave the fighting up to multiple teams of Navy Seals. We would then state to the other nations of the world that if they planned to attack any other nation, including the USA, we would send a Naval Seal team to eliminate their leader. It’s a pretty simple plan. If a leader of a country suppresses its people or threatens to invade another country, the Seals will kill him ... and they can’t be stopped.

The money saved by reorganizing the military command and slimming down the defense budget to support only Naval Seal teams would balance the budget of the United States of America. The elite volunteer forces would throw total fear into the hearts of the villains of the world and create a calm atmosphere throughout the world.

Now, if some movie director wanted to make a film that disparaged the religion of any country in the world, we would send out the Seals to “advise them” of such a bad idea. It would be their choice; try to rile up the world and suffer a barking seal in their face. Or, just shut up.

Less that 1,000 fully trained personnel would be required to set up the training and Seal teams with maybe 5,000 support troops who would supply the Seals with what they needed to accomplish their missions. The rest of the military personnel would all be returned home to their loved ones.

The Navy Seals are warriors of the highest ability and they are what is needed now—professionals. Too many lives have been lost and too many soldiers have been maimed and injured in too many wars that seem to drag out for years and years without any concrete victory. The old ways don’t work. Let the warriors handle it, pay them well and leave them to do what they’ve been trained to do.

It’s a simple idea. Nice talking to you.
