Community School girls’ soccer players went off for a week of fall outdoor trips Wednesday with a 3-0 home High Desert Soccer Conference win over the Gooding Senators at the Sagewillow soccer pitch.

Freshman Lilly Jenner continued her season-long stretch of consistent goal scoring with a pair of scores for the Cutthroats, who remained unbeaten in four games on their Elkhorn home field and well atop the HDSC standings.

Jenner (13 goals) has scored at least one goal in 11 of the 13 Cutthroat games. Junior Katie Feldman added a single goal. Senior Ellie Swanson added an assist in her team’s eighth shutout of the season.

Coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroats (10-2-1 overall, 9-0-1 league for 28 points) extended their league lead to 11 points over the Bliss Bears (5-0-2 for 17 points), although Bliss has played three fewer games. Bliss is Sun Valley’s next opponent, at home on Monday, Oct. 1.

It was the sixth straight 10-win season for the Cutthroats, who have outscored foes 65-14. Besides Jenner, the Cutthroats boast two other players with 10 or more goals—Hannah Dies (14) and Swanson (11).

Senators strike early, often

Injuries to important senior players stalled the early Community School momentum Wednesday night, and the visiting Gooding Senator boys counterattacked for a 4-1 HDSC victory at Browning Field.

Senior co-captain Zach Lindahl went down with a tweaked ankle in the first two minutes. Senior forward Mason Noyes strained his left knee at the 18-minute mark of a scoreless game. Deflated, the Cutthroats seemed powerless to stop Gooding’s 1-2 scoring punch of senior Federico Mendez and freshman Ramon Bernal.

Mendez (2 goals, 1 assist) and Bernal (2 goals, 1 assist) burned the Cutthroats for four goals in 19 minutes and took a 4-0 lead at the break. If not for the often spectacular goalkeeping of senior Christopher Nalen (12 saves), the spread might have been wider. Nalen was coach Richard Whitelaw’s “Man of the Match,” along with senior Cameron Jenner.

Senior co-captain Ben Kanellitsas had his team’s two best scoring chances before burying a penalty kick at 51 minutes.

Gooding (6-1-2 for 20 points) kept pace with Wendell (7-2-0, 21 points) while the Cutthroats (7-5-1, 5-4-1) stayed at 16 points.
