Painkiller thief sentenced

Jail term added to treatment program

By MATT FURBER
Express Staff Writer

Former Ketchum resident Meghan Marie Hoyt has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and a fine of $500 for theft of prescription painkillers and other property in March.

Hoyt has been living at a Utah treatment center after spending four days in the Blaine County jail following her arrest by Hailey police just after the crime. She has since become a resident of Utah.

During a sentencing hearing in 5th District Court in Hailey on Monday, Judge Robert J. Elgee said no amount of jail time can give Hoyt’s victims their sense of security back, but he was convinced that Hoyt’s efforts at rehabilitation could be successful. Hoyt’s sentence includes three years of probation. As part of her sentence, she will have to supply fingerprints and a DNA sample to authorities.

Hoyt’s treatment program will “mitigate what might otherwise be a [longer] jail sentence,” Elgee said, explaining that he was giving Hoyt credit for recognizing what she had done and what she has been doing to rehabilitate herself.

“I have no reason to believe you can’t continue on a path of care,” Elgee said to Hoyt in the courtroom.

Elgee said some jail time, an additional 26 days to the four that Hoyt has already served, was still in order. Hoyt must complete the jail term in one stint in the next year, either in Blaine County or Utah, and she was ordered to pay a fine of $500, plus court costs.
