Cutthroat soccer teams vie for HDSC honors

Boys inching up, girls staying on top

Anyone can win on any given day, in the words of Community School boys’ soccer coach Richard Whitelaw about the tightly wound High Desert Soccer Conference.

“Wendell, Gooding and Buhl are definitely the strongest teams in our league,” he said. “The district tournament is going to be a tight affair.”

So is the regular season.

The HDSC standings tightened up Monday when Whitelaw’s Cutthroats remained unbeaten at home with a 2-1 league victory over much-improved Declo (0-9-0, 0-8-0) at Elkhorn’s Browning Field.

Keegan Whitelaw and Bobby Corker scored for the winners in a very scrappy contest. Coach Whitelaw’s “Man of the Match” was defender Will Harder as the Cutthroats (7-4-1 overall, 5-3-1 league) added three points for a total of 16.

Buhl’s 4-2 home win over previously unbeaten Gooding improved the Tribe (7-3-1, 5-2-1) to 16 points, with Gooding (5-1-2) staying at 17 points. League-leading Wendell (6-2-0) has 18 points with its 6-3 victory Monday over Filer (1-10-0, 1-7-0).

The Cutthroats host Gooding today, Wednesday at 6 p.m. in a pivotal home game.

Last Thursday, the Cutthroat boys swept the season series with last year’s HDSC tournament champ and State 3A third-place Filer by a 3-1 score. “Man of the Match” Zach Lindahl buried two long-range free kicks and Tom Gillespie added a single goal.

“Man of the Match” was goalkeeper Christopher Nalen on Saturday in the 3-0 Cutthroat road loss to 4A Canyon Ridge (3-4-2) in Twin Falls.

Cutthroat girls stay in lead

Coach Kelly Feldman’s Cutthroat girls (9-2-1, 8-0-1 league for 25 points) extended their league lead Monday with a 5-0 home victory over the Declo Hornets (0-5-5, 0-4-4 league) on the Sagewillow Farms pitch.

Goal scorers were Lena Perenchio (2), Josie Allison, Ella Marks with her first goal and Lilly Jenner (11 goals, scoring in 10 of 12 games) as the Cutthroats remained unbeaten in their last eight games and posted their seventh shutout. Katie Feldman added an assist.

The Cutthroats host Gooding (1-6-1) today, Wednesday at 4:30 p.m., the Senators coming off a 4-0 road loss at Buhl (1-9-1, 1-6-1) Monday. A key league game this week has Bliss (5-0-2 league) hosting Filer (4-5-2, 4-2-2) Thursday. Filer beat Wendell (3-4-1) by a 4-1 score Monday.

On Saturday the Cutthroats kept their all-time winning record intact against the 4A Canyon Ridge Riverhawks (3-4-1) with a 1-0 non-conference win in Twin Falls. Allison scored the lone goal two minutes into the game on a Feldman assist.

The Cutthroats are 4-0 with four shutouts by a combined 16-0 score in the four-year series.

On Thursday, the Cutthroats swept the season series with Filer 5-2 on the Wildcat field. Scoring singles were Jenner, Emi Carr, Perenchio, Taylor Figge and Ellie Swanson.
