Serving success sparks Carey at Fish Tank

Panthers meet Cutthroats on court

You can pretty much count on one thing about her Panthers after coach Kathy Whitworth’s nine seasons guiding the Carey High School varsity volleyball teams. That is, their serving success is going to be tough to handle for any foe.

That was certainly the case Monday when Carey made its annual visit to the Fish Tank in Sun Valley for a Northside Conference match against coach Kristyn Price Rutland’s Cutthroat spikers. In a brisk 45-minute match, Carey swept to victory 25-11, 25-7, 25-9.

Carey piled up 53 winners including 15 aces at the serving stripe and had a 24-9 advantage in kills. Leading the Panther hitters were seniors McKayla Mecham (9 kills, 4 blocks), Morgan Parke (7 kills) and Jaide Parke (6 kills).

Spread evenly were serving points led by junior Lilly Rivera (14 winners, 4 aces), Parke (13 winners, 5 aces), junior Daphne Kirkland (11 winners, 2 aces), soph Paige Koudelka (6 winners, 2 aces) and Mecham (6 winners, 2 aces).

The Cutthroats enjoyed moments to shine as well.

Leading the way was the strong defensive play of 5-7 junior outside hitter Caroline Jones (4 kills). Others were 5-5 junior opposite/middle blocker Jolie Blair (2 kills, 3 winning serves) and 5-6 sophomore outside hitter Emily Ehret (2 kills, 1 ace). Allison Fluetsch, a 5-9 junior middle blocker, made some nice plays at the net.

Carey (4-4, 2-4 league) has its Homecoming triangular meet with Murtaugh and Glenns Ferry Thursday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. and makes the long trip to Malta for a match with Raft River on Tuesday, Sept. 25.

The Community School (0-7, 0-6 league) visits Twin Falls Christian Academy Thursday and hosts three-time defending State 1A Division 2 champ Camas County of Fairfield Friday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. before taking off until Oct. 2.
