Valley medical staff to travel to Haiti

St. Luke’s team will provide surgeries to those in need

By EXPRESS STAFF

A volunteer group of St. Luke’s Wood River staff is traveling to Haiti during the first week in September to provide often life-saving surgeries, as well as to see an array of patients for medical consultations in a clinic setting.

The trip was spearheaded by Dr. Daniel Judd, an orthopedic surgeon at St. Luke’s Clinic-Sun Valley Sports Medicine, and the group includes John Driscoll, an anesthesiologist; Hazel Thorne, Karen Hofman and Patty Dorr, all registered nurses; Tiffany Miller, a certified surgical technologist;  and unit clerk Lisa Ferguson.

“This group of volunteer medical and nursing health professionals is not only donating their time and their skills to provide surgeries to people who otherwise would die or have their lives severely compromised by their medical conditions, but also pay for all of their travel, accommodation and trip expenses,” said St. Luke’s Wood River CEO Cody Langbehn. “We are incredibly proud of this team’s endeavor and their level of compassion and generosity.”

The medical team will be working at the Hospital Adventist d’Haiti, a 70-bed facility outside Port-au-Prince. The cases they will see in this developing country will include congenital abnormalities like clubfoot and rickets, a disorder caused from a nutrition deficiency, diagnoses that are rarely seen in the U.S.

The hospital facility where the team will be performing these surgeries suffers from broken and outdated equipment and deteriorating buildings. They will be traveling with and providing all of their own medical equipment, from scrubs, gowns and masks to medical instruments and medications. The medications were donated by St. Luke’s Wood River. Many of the other surgical items were donated from vendors like Kimberly-Clark and Stryker, and Hands of Hope in Boise.
