Turn-of-the-century discussion with art historian
    Vienna in the years around 1900 simmered with radical artistic and intellectual innovation. Join art historian Rebecca Houze for a free lecture and slideshow exploring the connections between the art and fashion of this period on Thursday, Sept. 6, at 5:30 p.m. at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts.
    Her lecture, “Modernism and Fashion in Fin de Siècle Vienna,” will look at the work of artists Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, as well as clothing by avant-garde fashion designers and artists of the day. The lecture is the concluding event in a collaborative project between The Center, the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and the Community Library exploring the explosion of creativity in late 19th-century Vienna. The term “fin de siècle” means “end of the century” and has been used to describe both the end and the beginning of an era.
    Houze is an associate professor of art history at Northern Illinois University who specializes in the history of design, architecture and the decorative arts. She is currently working on a book titled “Principles of Dress: Nationalism, Imperialism, and Modern Design in Austria-Hungary, 1867–1918.”

End-of-summer show at Boulder Mountain Clay and Art Gallery
    Boulder Mountain Clay and Art Gallery will exhibit the summer work of Gail Price and Susan Ward on Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5-7 p.m. and on Friday, Sept. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Price has been working in the gallery for the past three months, having arrived from Aspen, Colo., at the beginning of June.  In Aspen, she owned and operated the Aspen Potters Inc. Gallery for 10 years.
    She said Sun Valley has invigorated her creativity and she has created a number of lidded vessels incorporating “Lonesome Larry” in the design.  “Lonesome Larry” was the only sockeye salmon returning to Redfish Lake in 1992.  Beautiful vessels featuring fish will also be for sale.
    Ward, a local clay artist, spent time this spring and summer working on tall, thrown cylinders that have been faceted.  These works are the beginning of a series of even bigger works that she will be working on this fall. Serving bowls will also be featured.

Sawtooth Mountain Mamas Quilt Luncheon
    The Sawtooth Hotel will host the Sawtooth Mountain Mamas Quilt Luncheon/Show and Tell on Saturday, Sept. 15, at noon.
    Bring a quilt or quilt pieces to show and enjoy lunch for $17. There will be a raffle for a quilt and door prizes at the luncheon.
    The Mountain Mamas organization sponsors, coordinates and directs several major fundraising events during the year, including one of the most popular arts and crafts fairs in the state. The group meets the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. and meets weekly for breakfast.

Intimate setting for “The Woman in Black”
    Prepare yourself to be scared out of your wits. The unanimously acclaimed “The Woman in Black” combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir.
    Company of Fools member John Glenn directs what is promised to be an unforgettable play, giving audiences an evening of unremitting, spine-tingling drama as they are transported into a terrifying and ghostly world. Each performance will be limited to only 40 audience members per night, as the action takes place throughout the theatre while the audience is seated on the stage.
    Based on Susan Hill’s 1983 horror fiction novel about a menacing ghost that haunts a small English town, the story was adapted for the stage by Stephen Mallatratt. First performed in the U.K. in 1987, the play is now celebrating 23 years in London’s West End with more than 7 million people having lived to tell the tale of one of the most exciting, gripping and successful theater events ever staged.
