Ninth annual Plein Air Painters of Idaho

    Once again, both professional and amateur members of the Plein Air Painters of Idaho will gather for three days of plein-air—on-location—painting.
    The organization is holding its annual Redfish Plein Air Paint-Out starting today, Sept. 5,  and finishing with an exhibition on Friday, Sept. 7, at Redfish Lake Lodge.  
    The public is invited to any portion of the event to observe the artists, who are coming from all parts of Idaho to set up their easels around Redfish and throughout the Sawtooth Valley to capture the early autumn colors in compositions painted in oils, acrylics and watercolors from early dawn to dusk.  
    Maps showing where painters will be painting each day will be posted in the artists tent next to the lodge. Times will also be provided for free artist demonstrations at easy-to-reach sites near the lodge for those interested in watching the creation and process of an original painting.
    Founding members slated to participate are Gertrude Hudson, Dee Miller, Fred Choate and Tricia May, all of Boise. Deanna Schrell of Ketchum and Karen Jacobsen of Hailey will also attend.  
    Jacobsen’s scientific illustrations and watercolors were spotlighted in a traveling exhibit titled “Beyond the Edge of the Sea: Diversity of Life in the Deep-Ocean Wilderness,” which showed at the National Science Foundation headquarters in Arlington, Va. Some of Jacobsen’s watercolor illustrations were also part of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts’ Winter 2011 exhibition, “Creatures: From Bigfoot to the Yeti Crab.” Jacobsen also participated in this summer’s first Driggs Plein Air Festival and won an award for best watercolor.
    Local plein-air favorites Kim Howard, Karen Lesser, Betsy Pearson, Pamela Street and Liza Wilson will also be painting on site and exhibiting their works.
    The Redfish Paint Out concludes with an exhibition and reception held Friday, from 5-7 p.m. in the artists tent next to Redfish Lake Lodge.  Light refreshments will be served. and the works of the participating artists will be exhibited and available for purchase. In addition, there will be a wine tasting. Music by Mineral Hill will be performed by Daniel Norton and Ben Black throughout the reception. The Hailey-based brothers play folk-melded blues.
