WRHS soccer teams hold ‘Hawks scoreless

Girls win 7-0, boys on top 1-0

Thursday’s Great Basin Conference prep soccer action for the Wood River High School teams turned into a pair of shutouts—the Wolverine girls blanking the Canyon Ridge Riverhawks 7-0 in Hailey, and the boys continuing their defensive excellence 1-0 over the ‘Hawks in Twin Falls.

Coach Jenni Conrad’s girls (3-1-0, 2-0-0 league) extended their scoreless streak to 240 minutes over three games with their 7-0 league victory over the Riverhawks (1-2-0, 1-1-0 league). Samantha Sutton scored a pair of goals as six different Wolverines put the ball in the net.

The outcome was never in doubt after a first half during which the Wolverines out-shot the ‘Hawks 14-0, had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks and built a 6-0 lead at intermission. Junior Haley Montgomery opened the scoring at the two-minute mark with a laser shot from just outside the box.

Setting up and kicking quickly, sophomore Brigette Thomas (3 assists) curled in a corner kick for her first goal of the season at 12 minutes. Freshman Tayte Kelly delivered a pass to senior Miranda Gasenica, who controlled the ball in the box and tapped the third goal home at 16 minutes.

Sutton’s header on another well-aimed Thomas corner kick made it 4-0 at 24 minutes, then Sutton launched a 22-yard cannon from Thomas at 28 minutes for a 5-0 cushion. Thomas’ third assist, on a corner kick, ended up with an Allison Gasenica goal. In the second half, sophomore Lucy Brannon finalized the score at 7-0 on a pass from Megan Sfingi.

In the goal were Sage Rust (first half) and Olivia Roche (second half).

The Wood River girls hosted Jerome (1-4-0, 0-2-0) Tuesday and visit Minico (0-4-2, 0-1-1) in Rupert Thursday.

Boys’ coach Luis Monjaras said after his team’s 4-0 home win over Burley Aug. 28 that it wasn’t going to get any easier in league play. But opponents are also finding the Hailey defense a tough nut to crack.

At Twin Falls Thursday, the Wolverine defense remained unblemished in 320 minutes this season with a 1-0 win over Canyon Ridge (0-3-1, 0-2-0).

Senior Alex Lopez finished in the 37th minute after a feed from the left flank by sophomore Desmond Porth. Junior Max Mauldin earned the shutout. “The boys played well on their small field and we managed to get some good offensive attacks,” said Monjaras.

Wood River (2-0-2, 2-0-0 league) faced its biggest challenge to date Tuesday with a road trip to Jerome (4-0-1, 2-0-0). Then the Wolverine boys play at home Thursday, Sept. 6 against Minico (2-2-1, 1-1-0) and again Tuesday, Sept. 11 with Twin Falls (1-3-1, 0-2-0).
