Sun Valley’s Lyle Pearson Labor Day tennis tournament had the feeling of a college reunion last weekend.

That’s because there was a sizable contingent of college tennis players and coaches from Boise State University, the University of Idaho and Idaho State University in Pocatello.

All the Open classes including a huge turnout of 40 players for the Men’s Open draw featured college players battling for merchandise prizes on a mostly sunny weekend. Only a rain downpour late Saturday afternoon set the schedule back.

Men’s Open singles champion was Boise State University sophomore Garrett Patton, a 2011 Boise High graduate and two-time Idaho high school singles king who is the son of BSU head tennis coach Greg Patton. He won by injury default over former Cal Poly San Luis Obispo doubles ace Brett Van Linge.

Consolation winner was ISU soph Austin Miller of Eagle over former Gonzaga University star Jake Davis of Utah.

University of Idaho junior Vicky Lozano of Mexico, an All-WAC player for the Vandals last year who excelled in singles, won the Women’s Open title in straight sets over BSU sophomore Sammie Watson of Denver, a transfer from Utah.

Garrett Patton teamed up for the Men’s Open doubles victory with Matt Oddonetto of Boise, last spring’s Idaho 5A boys’ singles runner-up and incoming Vandals freshman prospect.

Women’s Open doubles winners were University of Idaho junior and sophomore Beatriz Flores of Guzman, Mexico and Sophie Vickers of Australia.

In Mixed Open doubles, former University of Idaho head women’s tennis coach Tyler Neill partnered for the victory with Boise High School sophomore tennis sensation Bianca Mok—the reigning State 5A girls’ singles queen.

Tournament co-director John Perry said there were 174 players in 278 events for the three-day holiday tennis tournament presented by Sun Valley Resort Saturday through Monday, Sept. 1-3 on the resort courts.

Of local players, Brad DuFur and Cyndi DuFur won the combined 8.5 doubles consolation title in straight sets, while Barbara Figge and Joanne Wetherell won runner-up honors in Women’s 4.0 doubles.

Sponsors were Lyle Pearson Motors, Sun Valley Resort and Atkinsons’. Top results from the 2012 Labor Day meet follow. There were eight singles classes and 10 doubles categories:
