Rusch, Nurge offer hill climb tips Saturday

By JEFF CORDES
Express Staff Writer

World champion mountain bike rider Rebecca Rusch of Ketchum is pairing up with Bill Nurge to offer a free “Get Ready for the Baldy Hill Climb” mountain fitness clinic on Saturday, Sept. 1 from 9-11 a.m. at River Run Lodge.

On the morning of the Wagon Days Big Hitch Parade, fitness enthusiasts can learn how to use the mountain as a training tool in preparation for the 34th annual Baldy Hill Climb on Saturday, Sept. 29.

Nurge is owner and head coach at the Hardcore Training Center in Ketchum. He is a 12-time winner of Baldy ascent races and holds the course record for the Baldy Double and Baldy Snowshoe Races.

A world champion mountain biker and Leadville 100 Mountain Bike record holder, Rusch holds the current Baldy Double record for women.

Nurge said, “Remember the Baldy Hill Climb is not just a hike/run. There is also a mountain bike division and a Baldy Double division where you bike up, download and then hike/run up. This clinic is for hikers, bikers and the insane "double-athletes."

Saturday’s event features a 30-minute talk on training and getting stronger followed by question-and-answer session. Rusch plans to demonstrate world-class climbing technique and secrets on a mountain bike.

The two-hour meeting will conclude with a walk up Lower River Run including technique tips on effective poling and striding. There will be the optional ‘timed trial’ up Mid River Run.

Nurge said, “It's a good opportunity to visit the ‘Baldy Pain Cave’ if you haven't been there in a while.”

Bring your own poles and energy drink. The clinic will be an informal and fun learning experience for all participants.
