GBC prep runners coming to White Clouds

WRHS cross country preview

It’s been 31 years, but the district high school cross country meet is returning to Sun Valley Golf Course in October.
The Wood River High School cross country team plans to host the 2012 Great Basin Conference 3.1-mile meet for prep runners from six schools on the resort’s White Clouds Golf Course on Wednesday, Oct. 17.
Last held on the Sun Valley Golf Course in 1981 when Lori Pascoe and Greg Stone were the top Wolverine runners, the district meet will qualify runners for the State 4A competition Oct. 27 in Lewiston.
Hosting two meets locally this year, Wood River will also team up with the Community School to stage the Sun Valley Classic at Sagewillow Farms in Elkhorn on Friday, Sept. 7.
But first, the Wolverines of boys’ coach Monte Brothwell and girls’ coach Heather Miller will kick off their season at the Twin Falls/Jerome Invitational on Friday, Aug. 24 at the College of Southern Idaho in Twin Falls.
Brothwell said, “We are excited to have a lot of returning runners from last year.” The boys did graduate a strong four-year runner in Ben Stout, second in last year’s district meet and eighth at the State 4A meet.
Senior Chase England (10th district, 31st state) and sophomore Alexis Gonzalez (9th district, 43rd state), both members of the GBC All-Conference second team, will lead the way.
“We will be hosting district this year on the Sun Valley White Clouds golf course,” said Brothwell. “Many thanks to Sun Valley for providing us with this great area to host on.”
Miller said, “This year’s girls’ team is looking strong despite the loss of last year’s athletes Corrine Smith (4th district, 18th state), Jade Atkinson (16th district) and Dani McLaughlin (22nd district).”
Returning strong and leading the pack is junior Janel Passey (18th district). Newcomer Madi Hendrix, a senior who also plays volleyball, is a welcome addition.
Back for their fourth years are seniors Kaitlyn Landis (36th district) and Brooke Lawrence (29th district). Miller said, “They will provide leadership and motivation for the underclassmen.”
    Runners now practicing:
Senior boys: Jake Adicoff, Chase England, Jimmy Holcomb, Austin Kowalis and Ketchum Wilt.
Senior girls: Madi Hendrix, Kaitlyn Landis and Brooke Lawrence.
