Discuss dark-sky documentary with PBS producer

    Idaho Public Television is holding a special event, “An Evening with POV and Simon Kilmurry,” with a screening of “The City Dark” by Ian Cheney at the Magic Lantern Cinemas in Ketchum, Thursday, Aug. 23, at 7 p.m.
    “The City Dark” explores the idea of darkness becoming extinct. The filmmaker began pondering the topic when he moved from rural Maine to New York City and discovered the streets awash in light and skies that seemed devoid of stars.
    What followed was a journey to America’s brightest and darkest corners, with Cheney asking astronomers, cancer researchers and ecologists what is lost in the glare of the city lights.
    It is described in promotional notes as “a fascinating introduction to the science of the dark and an exploration of our relationship to the stars.”
    Kilmurry is the executive producer of the award-winning PBS documentary series “POV.”
    After the screening, there will be a hosted reception at Davies-Reid Tribal Arts, 131 First Ave. N. in Ketchum. The reception will include a question-and-answer session in which the audience will have an opportunity to discuss ideas and thoughts with Kilmurry, who is coming to Ketchum from New York City for the special event.
