Woman charged with 2nd felony DUI

Police allege Darcie Olsen was under the influence in Aug. 14 crash

A Sun Valley woman convicted two years ago of felony DUI finds herself in jail again for allegedly being under the influence of drugs or alcohol when she crashed her car through a fence last week in Sun Valley.

Darcie Olsen, 51, remained incarcerated Tuesday in the Blaine County jail on $75,000 bond following her arrest Aug. 14 by the Sun Valley Police Department.

Police Chief Cameron Daggett said Olsen was taken into custody after she crashed her vehicle, a white 2001 Toyota Corolla, through a fence at the intersection of Moritz Road and Trail Creek Road.

“She was not injured and we took her to jail,” Daggett said.

A probable-cause affidavit filed by Sun Valley Patrolman Conar Cunningham states that after the crash, Olsen was “shaking, sweating profusely, had watery eyes and had trouble remembering events of the accident.” Cunningham wrote that Olsen failed three field sobriety tests.

He wrote that a witness took Olsen’s keys from her car to keep her from leaving the accident scene.

Olsen was on probation at the time for a Blaine County felony DUI conviction in 2010. In that case, she was given a suspended five-year prison sentence, sentenced to 90 days in the county jail and placed on probation for four years.

According to court records, Olsen has prior misdemeanor DUI convictions in Blaine County in 2005 and 2007. Idaho law provides that a person with two prior misdemeanor DUI convictions shall be charged with a felony if arrested within 10 years of those convictions. The law also provides that a person with a felony DUI conviction shall be charged with another felony if arrested within 15 years of the earlier felony conviction on another DUI charge.

At an initial court appearance on Aug. 15, Blaine County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Angela Nelson described Olsen as a “habitual drunk driver,” saying she has six previous DUI convictions in Idaho and other states.

According to court records, defense attorney Andrew Parnes asked for bond of $25,000 and told the court that if released, Olsen “would agree not to drive.” Parnes further stated that Olsen has “mental health issues that have been ongoing for several years.”
