Sun Valley audit release delayed again

Results of investigation now expected on Friday

Sun Valley Mayor Dewayne Briscoe announced last Thursday that the report for a voluntary forensic audit that the city commissioned in April, expected to be released Monday, will not be ready until Friday.

“That’s a drop-dead date,” Briscoe said at a City Council meeting, referring to the date of Friday, Aug. 24.

The report’s release has been delayed twice already. It was originally expected to be completed by June 30, then by late July.

“Once you start an investigation like this, you find one thing that leads to another and so on,” Briscoe said at a City Council meeting earlier this month.

The audit was commissioned by the city after allegations of misconduct and poor accounting practices surfaced last year at City Hall, prior to Briscoe’s taking office. In the meantime, the employment contract with the then-city administrator was terminated, the city clerk and treasurer were paid tort-claim settlements and resigned, and the fire chief has been out of office on administrative leave.

In an interview, Briscoe said the report will provide “guidance” to the city as it moves forward past last year’s personnel issues.

Briscoe said on Aug. 1 that once the report is complete, the council will decide whether to release it to the public.

“My opinion is the people paid for it, they deserve to see it,” he said.
