9-0 win over Buhl for Cutthroat girls
The Community School girls’ soccer team opened the defense of its High Desert Soccer Conference tournament championship with a 9-0 league victory over the Buhl Tribe on Monday afternoon in Buhl.
Coach Kelly Feldman’s Sun Valley girls (1-0-0) got two goals apiece from their top two scorers from last season, senior Ellie Swanson and junior Hannah Dies, and had senior Ella Marks and freshman Olivia Ott share the shutout goalkeeping.
Single Cutthroat goals came from senior Taylor Figge, juniors Katie Feldman and Hayley Murach, and freshmen Lilly Jenner and Emily Siegel.
Last season, the Cutthroats went 1-1-1 with Buhl but won the most important of the three meetings, a 5-2 victory over the Tribe in the HDSC title game at Buhl. The Tribe is rebuilding after last fall’s 11-4-3 campaign during which Buhl won the league’s regular-season title.
The Cutthroat girls travel to Declo today, Wednesday and then clash with the defending State 3A champion McCall-Donnelly Vandals Friday, Aug. 24 at 5 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. on the McCall field. The Sun Valley girls return to play at Gooding Monday, Aug. 27 and then open their home campaign Tuesday with Filer.
Also Monday, the Cutthroat boys (0-1-0) played host Buhl to a scoreless draw until the 70th minute of the league game, but the Tribe exploded for three goals and earned a 3-0 victory. Cutthroat goalkeeper Chris Nalen (14 saves) was tested.
Coach Richard Whitelaw’s Sun Valley boys try for their first win at Declo today, Wednesday and then join the girls for the McCall trip this weekend, meeting the Vandal boys at 5 p.m. Friday and again Saturday morning. First home game with Filer is Tuesday.
Rally for the Cure golf tourney at Bigwood
Over 60 men and women participated in the Rally for the Cure golf tourney Aug. 14-15 at Bigwood Golf Course at Thunder Spring, Ketchum. Benefiting breast cancer awareness, the event raised more money than in previous years, said Cindy Fabian, co-chairwoman along with Barbara Williams.
All players who hit the green on No. 8 hole earned prizes. Closest-to-the-pin for women was Jackie Demeral with Patty Moulton a close second. Closest-to-the-pin for men were Gene Korby with Aaron Thompson a half-inch behind.
Rally headquarters donated prizes along with Atkinsons’, Sports Connection, Perry’s, Lefty’s, Grumpy’s, Magic Lantern, Sushi on Second, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory, Smoky Mountain Pizza, Ketchum Kitchens, Webb Nursery and Bigwood Golf.
Battle of the Blades tickets on sale
Tickets are on sale for “The Battle of the Blades,” a popular local figure skating competition that pairs professional ice skaters with well-known locals.
The show is Saturday, Sept. 8 at 8 p.m. at Sun Valley Skating Center. General admission east and west bleacher seating is $25 for adults and $10 for students. Center Ice bleachers are $50 per ticket and special VIP armchair seats at the ice’s edge are $150. Seating is assigned by section on a first-come, first-served basis. Picabo Street stars in new TV series
Olympic gold medalist Picabo Street, 41, a native of Triumph, Idaho who grew up skiing on Baldy and living in the Wood River Valley, is co-starring in a television series entitled “Stars Earn Stripes,” shown Mondays on NBC.
The competition show is designed to honor U.S. armed forces by showing competitors like Street and world boxing queen Laila Ali tackling complicated missions inspired by real military exercises. Any winnings of the competitors are donated to first-responder charity and veterans’ groups. Street, for example, is playing for Hiring Our Heroes.
Payette Lakes triathlon set for Saturday
The 2012 Payette Lakes Ski Club Mountain Triathlon scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 25 has a new venue—starting and finishing in downtown McCall.
The Olympic and Team distances are 1.5-kilometer swim, 40k bike and 10k run, while the Sprint distances are 1k swim, 20k bike, 5k run. The out-and-back bike course goes along the west side of Payette Lake on Warren Wagon Rd. The out-and-back run is a loop in Ponderosa State Park. Ben Hurtig 410 trapshoot
Twenty trapshooters gathered at Blaine County Gun Club in Ohio Gulch on Sunday, Aug. 5 for the Ben Hurtig Memorial 410 Gauge Shoot.
Leading the way in the 410 Division were Gary Goodenough and Bob Commons, with 44s out of 50 targets. They were followed by Tom Schmeltz and Ben Hoff with 40s. Wendy Collins (28) was top woman.
In the Wobble 5-Stand, Zak Sjoberg and Arlen Chaney shot 44s, followed by Bob Commons and John Wells.
The shoot was named for Hurtig, a 50-year Ketchum resident and U.S. Marines veteran who died at 93 in Jan. 2006. He operated Sun Valley Gun Club for nearly 25 years.
Hole-in-one at Valley Club
Marnee Wirth aced the No. 6 hole of The Valley Club South Course Friday, Aug. 17 using a 9-iron from the Red Tees. Witness was Beatrice Renick.
Lyle Pearson Labor Day tennis Sept. 1-3
Tournament director David Perry has announced plans for the Lyle Pearson Labor Day Tennis Championships presented by Sun Valley Resort on the Sun Valley courts.
The U.S.T.A. Intermountain competition is scheduled for three days, Saturday, Sept. 1 through Monday, Sept. 3. Players may enter three events, with two matches guaranteed. Entries close Tuesday, Aug. 28 at midnight Mountain Time.
