Daigh makes a move on Bogus Basin climb

Wood River cyclists grind uphill


Ketchum cyclist Dan Daigh said hello to the Men’s 60-plus class by winning his division in Saturday’s 40th annual Bogus Basin Hill Climb on a 14.5-mile course with 3,500 feet of climbing near Boise.

Daigh was one of 16 Wood River Valley cyclists among 220 male and 49 female finishers, but he was the only local to win his class. Chip-timed in 1.03:01, he improved by one minute and 55 seconds over his Bogus finish last year and jumped all the way from 49th to 23rd overall.

Other big improvements:

( Nanette Hinton improved 11:41, going from 251st to 177th overall and jumping three places in her class; Mariel Platt improved 3:40, advancing from 222nd to 191st;

( Jim Walker sliced 2:02 of his time, moving from 179th to 133rd; and John Swyers took 1:22 off his Bogus Basin time, jumping from 170th to 127th.

Overall BBHC winner in 55:23 was Daniel Bechtold, 26, of Boise and Hagens Berman Cycling Team. The reigning Idaho Time Trial Festival individual TT king was 15 seconds ahead of Seth Merriman of Eagle and 21 seconds faster than Michael Tobin of Boise.

Women’s winner was Brooke Parent of Boise, 25th overall in 1.03:02.

Last year’s BBHC men’s runner-up Richard Feldman, 43, of Ketchum is overseas training for the World Masters Cycling Federation World 20-kilometer Time Trial Aug. 29 near St. Johann, Austria.

Saturday’s overall results for winners and locals in the 277-racer field:

1—Daniel Bechtold of Boise 55:23. 3—Michael Tobin 55:44 (1st 45-49, 54 seconds faster than last year). 23—Dan Daigh 1.03:01 (1st 60-plus). 25—Brooke Parent of Boise 1.03:02.

48—Kris Thoreson 1.07:55 (6th 50-59). 64—Scott Grill 1.11:11 (9th 50-59). 73—Ray Liermann 1.12:03 (10th 50-59). 105—Rick Knoebel 1.16:45 (18th 50-59). 127—John Swyers 1.18:49 (8th 60-plus). 133—Jim Walker 1.19:39 (26th 50-59).

177—Nanette Hinton 1.25:44 (3rd 50-59, 21st woman). 191—Mariel Platt 1.26:22 (10th 30-39, 26th woman). 217—Roger Miller 1.30:39 (12th 60-plus). 248—Shawn Miller 1.40:12 (28th 40-44). 255—Carol Rank 1.44:32 (13th 50-59, 45th woman). 256—Francette Labatut-Miller 1.46:45 (14th 50-59, 46th woman).

263—Ellen Campion 1.54:06.8 (3rd 60-plus, 49th woman). 264—Tom Campion 1.54:06.9 (19th 60-plus). 266—Charley French 1.55:45 (20th 60-plus).
