Around Town

Hiker, author speaks of novel's inspiration

Nick O'Connell has climbed Alaska's Denali peak, the highest and coldest in North America. He will share how that experience and others converged to become "The Storms of Denali," his new novel about two lifelong friends and die-hard climbers on a treacherous journey up the mountain.

He will speak Saturday, Aug. 18, from 7-9 p.m. at All Things Sacred in the Galleria Building in Ketchum. Books are available at Chapter One Bookstore.

The author from Seattle has other books to his credit, including "Beyond Risk: Conversations with Climbers" and "On Sacred Ground: The Spirit of Place in Pacific Northwest Literature." He is a regular contributor to Newsweek, Outside, National Geographic Adventure, Conde Nast Traveler, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sierra, and other publications. He teaches for

Putts for Mutts looking for ladies

The Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley is inviting local women to participate in the third annual Putts for Mutts event on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. It's an opportunity to spend a few hours on the putting green while helping the shelter dogs and cats.

Novices and experienced golfers alike are invited. Only 72 women will be able to participate, so early registration is encouraged.

Putts for Mutts will take place at Sun Valley's 18-hole Sawtooth Putting Course on Sun Valley Road. The shelter is mixing it up by randomly drawing four-person teams to both increase the fun and level the playing field.

Event participation is $50 per person for advance registration, or $65 at the door.  Putters will be provided for those who don't have their own, as well as golf balls for everyone. No-host food and drinks will be available through the clubhouse.

For more information and to register online, visit www.animalshelterwrv.org or call 788-4351.
