Some people sweat bringing a new piercing home from college. Others are like Molly Sides, who is mostly excited but somewhat nervous to bring some friends to her hometown to introduce vignette installations of modern dance with a sense of humor destined to "Make a Scene."

The 24-year-old graduate of Hailey's Wood River High School is coming back with a bachelor's degree in fine arts in dance from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle and cohorts Ali Maricich (another local), and friends from Cornish and Seattle's dance scene Markeith Wiley, Calie Swedberg and Emily Sferra.

Together they will perform a variety of dance vignettes at the Ketchum Town Square on Friday, Aug. 17, at 7:30 p.m. The event was organized by Sides' former dance mentor Anne Winton, whom Sides called "her favorite dance teacher" at Footlight Dance Centre. Sponsored by the Ketchum Arts Commission, the show is free and all ages are encouraged to stop by for what is being described as an evening of dance solos and duets.

The performance is part of a one-week dance intensive that Footlight Dance Centre is holding with guest teachers like Sides, Maricich and Wiley helping out and other teachers from outside the valley offering hip hop, modern, ballroom and ballet, as well as pilates.

Sides has performed with the Portland dance/performance art company "tEEth," which was

Dance Magazine's "Top 25 to Watch for 2012." She is currently with Seattle's Lingo Dance Theatre and The New Animals.

She brings her first love, theater, to her current passion, meaning that her dance merges styles and genres for an unusual show with character work and text. Her goal is to broaden the offerings in smaller communities beyond traditional ballet.

"I am hoping this will catch on. What we all are hoping to do is break down the fourth wall (the division between the stage and the audience) so that we are actually sharing the space with you, the audience," she said. "What all of us love to do is make some sort of connection with you."

Expect to see everything from a woman setting a table to a duet with coins flying.

"I hope people walk away feeling like they just shared an experience that maybe they haven't had before. Something not so familiar," Sides said. "And for us, it's always fun to perform in a new space."

Also in town will be the Trey McIntyre Project, the phenomenal traveling dance troupe from Boise who will appear first at 4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17. at the square. The mission of Trey McIntyre Project is to advance the art of contemporary ballet in innovative and ground-breaking ways by nurturing, supporting and producing the work of choreographer Trey McIntyre. They will have a full performance at the Sun Valley Pavilion, Friday, Aug. 24. Tickets for this performance are available at www.seats.sunvalley.com.
