Concerts keep season kicking

Summer’s music keeps the party going

Summer has been the time for reunions from Stonewheat to Braun Brothers, and the latest to regroup on the national scale is Lonestar.

After a five-year-hiatus trying on their own respective careers, the original country group, four good old boys from Texas—Richie McDonald on lead vocals and piano with Michael Britt, Keech Rainwater and Dean Sams—play tonight, Aug. 15, at the Sun Valley Pavilion at the Sun Valley Resort. Founded in Nashville in 1992, the CMA's 2001 Vocal Group of the Year just released the single, "The Countdown," and a new album is forthcoming to mark their 20th anniversary. Peter Prekeges, owner of Grumpy's in Ketchum and Silver Dollar Saloon in Bellevue is turning 49 tonight, Aug. 15, and his friends from Up a Creek and Old Death Whisper are heading north to celebrate with him and friends. The "Hootenanny," which Prekeges said is "where they all sit around a microphone and play every song ever recorded" and "should be a hoot," begins at Grumpy's at 7 p.m.

The charitable concerts continue tonight, too, with Back Pedal and the 812 Band playing to benefit The Senior Connection at the Back Alley Party at Hailey's Wicked Spud from 6-9:30 p.m. If you feel like getting out of the valley, Carter Freeman plays at Smiley Creek north of Ketchum from 5-8 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 16, is jam-packed, too, with a fundraising party by the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation for Six at Sochi, from 5-9 p.m. at Ketchum Town Square. Doublewide, George DeVore and Safety Orange will entertain. There will be a raffle for a Baldy season ski pass, Blaine County Recreation District Nordic ski trail pass, and a Schwinn cruiser bike.

DeVore, fresh from last weekend's Braun Brothers Reunion, will leave the square and book it to Mahoney's in Bellevue for a free outdoor show at 6:30 p.m. If you are starting out the night in Bellevue, warm up with the Bermuda Cowboys at the Silver Dollar's Acoustic Happy Hour from 5-7 p.m.

CakeFaceJane will play the block party at Sun Valley Brewery in Hailey at 7 p.m.

And if you're partying up north still, Finn Riggins will be at the Stanley Street Dance from 5-9 p.m.

Whiskey Jacques has two bands this weekend with Marinade with special guests Pool Party on Friday, Aug. 17, and The Whales, Saturday, Aug. 18. See the Calendar on C4 for specifics and any last minute additions.

George DeVore makes a stop at Bellevue's Silver Dollar at 9:30 p.m. Friday night. The Dollar offers free shuttle home for Hailey and Bellevue residents.

And, this dispatch arrived at the Express from the boys in the band Old Death Whisper.

"In the settlement of Hill City, Idaho, between Fairfield and Mountain Home, there lies a small store where passers-by can stop in for a Yoo-Hoo, a bag of chips, but more importantly, an ice cold beer from the saloon which lives behind the store. It is here where, on Saturday, Aug. 18, music, dancing, camping and general partying will happen when Old Death Whisper hosts 'Occupy Hill City.' The first 'occupy' of its kind is not affiliated with any political views, religious beliefs and does not intend to prove anything other than the fact that Idaho is one of the greatest places on earth and the people that live here love their music and beer."

The honky tonk band hosts this mini-festival starting at 5 p.m. It will include Up a Creek, Lower Broadford Boys, Dead Brook Trout, The Damphools, Richardson Ground Squirrel and The Cornback Rattlers from Boise and George DeVore and some surprises. There is a suggested donation of $10 to help pay the bands. Party favors and other donations will be accepted. Tent camping available. In-towners in Ketchum can hear Dave Manning from 6-9 p.m. at Lefty's Deck on Saturday, Aug. 18, and Ethan Tucker, who is touring a new album with songs produced by Michael Franti, plays Saturday at 9:15 p.m. at Sawtooth Club and then at Lefty's Deck, Sunday, Aug. 19, from 6-9 p.m.

Music doesn't end when the weekend does. The Sun Valley Brewery Block Party starts at 8 p.m. with Tater Famine in Hailey on Monday, Aug. 20. Old Death Whisper plays Ketch'Em Alive in Forest Service Park from 7-9 p.m.

This wrap-up is not a reflection of all the town's music, merely a sampling of what was known as of press time. Check with your local watering hole or the Calendar online for additions.
