Remember when I first got here and I got to volunteer for the Sun Valley Writers' Conference up at the Sun Valley Resort, the one you say looks like living on top of a birthday cake? Well, this year, I get to cover it. There are so many cool writers I can't believe you aren't here for it. Come on, there's still time, it starts Friday, Aug. 17 and runs through Monday, Aug. 20. There's even a fellow Texan. Yeah! S.C. Gwynne from Texas Monthly Magazine, don't you know him?

Anyway, this is a reader's paradise. People have had tickets for more than a year and all the season passes are gone. Those guests are going to get to speak and mingle all weekend with their favs, lucky dogs. There will be some big names giving talks that you could still see if you would just get up here! Walter Isaacson will be talking about Steve Jobs on Friday night, hottie Tom Brokaw will discuss America's future on Saturday night, Jennifer Homans will talk about the history of ballet Sunday afternoon and Paul Hendrickson will talk about Hemingway Sunday. A flight + a mere $35 and you can see one of these. Wait, well, not Brokaw or Isaacson. Sold out. Come on! Time is running out.

Just to show you what you missed, though, here is just some of the incredible line-up. There's that playwright you love from Dublin, Sebastian Barry, and James Fallows from NPR. Chad Harbach is going to talk about debuting as an author, maybe one day that will be us, huh? But right now, it's his turn with "The Art of Fielding." My colleague Kate Wutz is going to interview memoirist Alexandra Fuller. Tyler is reading "Cocktail Hour Under the Tree of Forgetfulness," right now. Cowboy knew about her before I did! But, not before you, of course. Dying to read her since you told me you think Brits may have stolen the title of top producer of eccentric mothers from us Southerners. I'll ask Kate to ask about that.

Pulitzer Prize winner E.O. Wilson can't talk to me because, if you can believe this message from the conference, he wants to "conduct an ant expedition," the nerve :0!

Oh well, there is a cool thing at the Community Library. Documentarian Jessica Wu, a guest of the SVWC, is going to talk about her film "Last Call at The Oasis" at 5 p.m. Monday Gonna see about that for sure. Drought year isn't just hurting Texas.

Anyway, besides the fact that your granddaughters are about to turn 9, thought I would try and lure you out by your professional passion side before school starts! Check it out, all the details are online at www.svwc.com. Maybe next year?

Love, Jen
