French, Montgomery on podium at Emmett

Excellent triathlon efforts

Wood River Valley triathletes Charley French and Georgie Montgomery won their age classes Saturday, Aug. 11 during the 11th annual Emmett Most Excellent Triathlon starting at Black Canyon Reservoir in southwest Idaho.

Ketchum's French competed in the Sprint Distance Triathlon on a 26-kilometer (15.9-mile) course. Montgomery was one of the Olympic Distance finishers on the 51.5k (31.9-mile) course. They were two of seven Wood River Valley finishers.

Having just turned 86, French won the Men's 80-and-over class in 1.34:52 with splits of 13:53 for the 500-yard swim, 40:27 for the 20k (12.4-mile) bike ride and 36:19 for the 5k (3.1-mile run. He was 128th of 197.

Montgomery, 47, of Hailey, won Women's 45-49 in 2.33:07 with splits of 27:07 for the 1.5k (0.9 mile) swim, 1.16:09 for the 40k (24.8-mile) bike ride and 44:58 for the 10k (6.2-mile) run. She was fourth in Female Masters and 73rd of 215 finishers.

In addition, 14-year-old Amanda Passey of Hailey won the Women's 13-14 age class in the Olympic race at 3.13:07, good for 181st overall, her splits of 31:32, 1.34:29 and 1.03:01.

Saturday's triathlon was a triumph for the 215 Olympic distance finishers and 197 completing the Sprint Triathlon.

Sadly, Dr. Matthew Sell, 58, of Boise, died after being pulled from the water by lifeguards near the end of the 0.9-mile swim. The neonatal and perinatal specialist was flown by air ambulance to an Emmett hospital where he was declared dead of possible cardiac arrest, according to news reports.

Olympic Triathlon

1—Kevin Everett, 37, of Boise 1.52:01 (17:25, 57:25, 35:39). 15—Jolene Wilkinson, 39, of Boise 2.10:12 (21:39, 1.03:03, 44:01). 141—Ryan Passey, 39, of Hailey 2.55:18 (32:29, 1.16:17, 1.00:24), 7th in Clydesdale.

Sprint Triathlon

1—Matthew Braun, 37, of Meridian 59:47 (6:31, 31:35, 19:24). 4—Justine Emgr, 27, of Eagle 1.05:13 (8:10, 32:36, 22:17). 93—Matthew Parke, 38, of Hailey 1.28:58 (15:24, 42:43, 25:10), 10th in Clydesdale. 96—Jared Hill, 35, of Hailey 1.29:15 (13:11, 42:43, 28:26), 11th in Clydesdale. 153—Jeffra Syms, 50, of Sun Valley 1.40:53 (15:14, 44:52, 33:26), 5th in Women's 50-54.
