Fall school sports set first practices

For WRHS, middle school


Blaine County public and private schools are starting athletic practices for the 2012 fall season—even though school doesn't start until Tuesday, Sept. 4. Games and matches will begin well before the start of school, so the Idaho Mountain Express will spread its pre-season outlooks over the next three weeks. This week, look for prep season schedules.

Football practices to begin

Wood River High School head football coach Kevin Stilling and his staff will accompany this year's varsity and junior varsity players to the team's annual three-day team building rafting trip in the Lowman area Thursday through Saturday, Aug. 9-11.

Practice sessions officially begin Monday, Aug. 13 from 8-9 a.m. and 5-8 p.m. at the high school in Hailey.

High school volleyball team hosts Aug. 9-10 clinic

The Wood River High School volleyball team is hosting a two-day pre-season clinic for girls entering grades 5-9 on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 9-10 from 9:30 a.m.-12 noon at the high school gym in Hailey.

Registration is Thursday at 9 a.m. and the middle school clinic will run from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon each day. Parents need to sign a waiver at registration. For questions or sign-up, call Wood River volleyball captains Kori Paradis at 721-3035 or Lily Richards at 309-3073.

Tryouts for the 2012 WRHS volleyball team begin Monday, Aug. 13 from 9:30-12 at the high school. Girls entering grades 9 and 11 must have a physical before starting practices, and all prospective players must complete certain forms. Questions, call varsity head coach Tim Richards at 578-7847.

Middle School boys' soccer begins Aug. 23

Head coach Greg Gvozdas has set the pre-season practice schedule for the Wood River Middle School boys' soccer team. All training sessions are held at the middle school soccer field, Hailey. Players should bring soccer shoes, ball, shinguards and water. Contact Gvozdas at 578-5030 ext. 2352 or at ggvozdas@blaineschools.org

First training sessions are Thursday and Friday, Aug. 23-24 from 4-5:30 p.m. They will be followed by a 9-11 a.m. session Saturday, Aug. 25. A full week of training will be held Monday through Friday, Aug. 27-31 from 4-5:30 p.m. each day. Team selection day is Tuesday, Aug. 28. Final pre-season practice is Saturday, Sept. 1 from 9-11 a.m.

Football at Middle School starts Aug. 15

Coach Chris Malmgren said that Wood River Middle School football starts on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at the Hailey school. Pad and locker checkout will be followed by impact testing and the first practice. Eighth-grade players should report at 12 noon Aug. 15 and the seventh-graders at 1:30 p.m. Visit the school's Web site for forms and further information.

Volleyball at the middle school begins Aug. 20

Wood River Middle School is having volleyball tryouts for all interested 7th and 8th grade girls Monday, Aug. 20 from 3-5 p.m. in the WRMS gym. Bring insurance and medical history information as well as water bottle and athletic clothing. All newcomers need to have had a physical and won't be able to tryout without one. Middle school cross country practices on Aug. 27

Coach Bill Cantrell (721-8810) has invited Wood River Middle School boys and girls to an informal pre-season meeting and practice run Monday, Aug. 27 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. at the middle school in Hailey. Bring running shoes and water. Questions, call boys' coach Cantrell or girls' coach Kristin Cassalia at 450-9501.
