Wood River U12 All Stars take home second place

The Wood River Black 12-and-under All Star team went to the Bear Lake Tournament on Saturday, July 21 and came home with a second place trophy.

The Bear Lake Tournament took off with eight teams in the 12-and under division with 10 players on each team.

In the first game in bracketed play Wood River beat Bear River, 6-5. Wood River's winning pitcher in the first game was Andy Ruiz. Andrew Nelson come on in relief as the pitching duo compiled three strikeouts on the day. The nifty Wood River All Stars had nine total hits and stole seven bases.

After the first win, Wood River got their bats hot as Soda Springs was on their next opponent. Wood River had 11 hits as it beat Soda Springs, 8-4.

The final out of the game came on an exciting throw-out at second base on an attempted steal. Catcher Connor Manning threw to second baseman Wyatt Parish who tagged the runner to end the game.

The final game was against the Snake River Giants. Despite putting up 19 hits on the game including double by Alvero Jiraldo and a home run by Manning, Wood River couldn't muster enough runs as the season came to an end. Wood River lost to Snake River, 13-9, but not before an impressive run to end the season.

"We have had an issue this year with hitting the ball," said head coach Scott Manning. "But our bats really took off during these games and everyone on the team hit the ball."

There were a number of great plays during the tournament including multiple thrilling catches and outstanding base running.

This is the second time Wood River placed second in a tournament this year.

"I could not be more proud of these kids, it was a privileged to be their coach," Manning said.
